ABC Fabric Magnets

ABC2.jpg

This fun project is a family friendly craft that can enliven the fridge or bulletin board.

You can use your alphabet in so many different ways! Substitute the magnet paper for sticker paper, double sided tape, or glue to decorate:

gift tags

note cards

file cabinets

picture frames

doors, windows, and mirrors

refrigerators, of course!

Curious about what fabrics we used in our alphabet?  You can read a list of them here.

LETTERS

Download the free Letter Template pdf

The finished size of each letter is approximately 3 inches tall.  If you'd like to make letters that are bigger or smaller, just enlarge or shrink the template on a photocopy machine, or draw them freehand.

MATERIALS

an assortment of fat quarters, a fabric bundle, or 1/4 yards of a variety of contemporary print fabric
pinking shears
fabric scissors
permanent marker
glue stick (optional)
sticker-backed magnet sheets

NOTE

You can find sticker-backed magnets at most office supply stores and online.  They come in a variety of sizes, from thin tape to letter-size sheets.  We found business card magnets that worked really well. We included a glue stick on the materials list just in case the magnets you find are less sticky than they should be.

ABCs of ABC Magnets

ATTACH FABRIC TO MAGNET

First, make sure your fabric is nice and flat (press it if it's not).

If you are using large sheets of magnet stickers, cut the paper down into smaller rectangles more suitable to your letter size.

Lay the fabric right side down on the table. Remove the paper from the sticky side of the magnet and affix the magnet to the fabric.

Apply pressure with your palm to make a solid bond.
Using your regular fabric scissors, cut out the magnet and fabric.  Set aside the excess fabric.

TRACE AND CUT LETTER
ABC6.jpg

Place magnet on the table with the fabric side down. Place the letter right side down on the magnet (the letter should be reversed so that when you turn the magnet right side up, the letter will be readable).

ABC7.jpg

Trace around the letter with your permanent marker, then cut out the letter using your pinking shears.

CUT OUT INTERIORS

For letters that have interior shapes, like B, you have one more step to complete.

Using your fabric scissors, not your pinking shears, cut a thin slice through the base of the letter.

ABC9.jpg

Switch back to your pinking shears and cut out the bottom shape.  Repeat for the second shape.  Be sure to leave at least one connecting point in the letter.

That's it!
