How much is too much color?

I thought I would have fun just picking colors I liked and throwing them all into the mix, and, what the hell, it would all look great. But then my mother got involved. She convinced me that it would look like I had dug into the furthest reaches of my stash basket, desperate for every last scrap. She encouraged a more disciplined approach. She kept saying, “Don’t you want it to be pretty?” Yes I do, mother. Here’s what we chose:Koigu Premium Merino in eight hand-dyed colors.  --Whitney

How many colors are too many? I made this blanket using 28 koigu colors both solids and multis and I made 2 #10 panels, because I wanted my blanket to be bigger. In addition to that, my outer border was 12 rounds - I wanted to use up the remaing yarn.Talk about not following instructions! Why so many colors? I wanted the squares to represent things about me that matter - my old school uniform, my moods, my mom's favorite colors, nature, music, my sorority colors, etc. To me my Babette blanket which I call now call Shannon's blanket, is absolutely beautiful, it has a message, it speaks to me in color and reminds me of my life's journey thus far :)

The colours and finished blanket are gorgeous. I've bought the pattern but see that it uses many more colours. I'd like to try one with 8 colours like you have, how many skeins of each colour did you use? I'd like to order some and am unsure how much to order. Cheers, Kim.

I have just read your heading of how much colour is too much? Made me chuckle as I have recently lost my job to the recession and being home alone, bored and pennyless I looked at my bag of wool oddments. I used to knit jumpers with pictures so plenty small amounts of many many colours. Just for something to do with my hands I made granny squares without even checking on the next colour out of the bag. The result is a very varied blanket that I'm actually quite pleased with in the end.

I love your Babette blanket.

I would like to make one myselves and will buy the yarn from your shop. Like yours I would like to use 8 colors, but I think it is a bit difficult for me to find out, how much yarn I must buy of each color.

I do have the pattern!

Thank you so much for your kindness.

Hi Jeanette,
2 or 3 of each should be plenty. If there is a color you really love and want to use more frequently get 4 of that color.

Just to let you know, we deleted your email address from your comment because we don't want you to start getting tons of spam.

Hope this helps, please let us know if you need further assistance.
