This class is designed for those who have recently learned the basics of knitting – casting on, knitting, purling and binding off- and are looking to take their skills beyond the scarf.  Together we will explore the multitude of places a basic hat pattern can take us – from a simple rolled edge cap or an all-purpose close-fitting hat, all the way to a sexy, slouchy cashmere or alpaca hat.  By the end of this class, you will have mastered the magical circular needle and the mysterious four double pointed needles-- making life so simple without seaming-- and transformed a few rows of decreasing into a fashion statement.

Required Supplies

Intro to Circular Knitting - White Caps Cowl

$100 for 4 Hours of Instruction

In this class, you will learn how to use circular needles while mastering colorwork and shaping. This cowl is knit primarily with Habu's thick-and-thin Cotton Nerimake Slub. It creates a decadent, cloud-like fabric that is both hearty and ethereal. And set against the cotton are thin stripes of Alchemy's Silken Straw, a meticulous, flat silk ribbon with a crisp finish and pearly shine. Together, these yarns form a graceful and surprising union, each complementing the other! During this class you will learn how to cast on, cast off, use decreases to form shaping, create a rolled hem and knit on circular needles. You will also learn the preferred method for changing colors of yarns between rows- creating a jogless color transition!

Required Supplies

  • 1 skein of Alchemy's Silken Straw. Shown in Platinum.
  • 3 skeins of Habu's Cotton Nerimake Slub. Shown in Undyed. (The dyed colors come in skeins of 108 yards rather than the 158 yards that the undyed comes in. If you are planning on using a dyed color, you will need 4 skeins.)
  • A US #4, 16-inch circular needle
  • stitch markers

This is a great project for knitters who are looking to take their knitting to the next level and learn a fun, interesting stitch.  Plus, once you put on this soft, squishy cowl, you won't want to take it off!!

Students should be comfortable with knitting basics. *Please note that although you will learn the skills needed to make your own Big Herringbone Cowl, you will not complete a full sized finished product in class.
All supplies can be purchased at Purl! Please make sure you have your supplies prepared and your yarn wound before the start of the first session.

Intro to Colorwork - Little Fair Isle Hat

$100 for 4 Hours of Instruction

Fair Isle is really one of the most fun things you can do in knitting! What looks so intricate is actually just a matter of knitting first with one color and then with a second, switching between the two as the pattern slowly emerges and blossoms into a fascinating and surprising design. The Little Fair Isle Hat pattern from the Purl Bee is a great place to start- small and manageable.

You will also learn to knit a fair isle swatch on circular needles during this class.

Intro to Double Knitting - Sprout Cowl

$100 for 4 Hours of Instruction

Double Knitting is a great technique that creates a cozy, double sided, reversible fabric with stockinette stitch on both sides.  In class, we will work on a swatch to get the basics of the technique down and then cast on to make a cozy, and relatively quick to knit, cowl.  Once you try double knitting, you'll be hooked! It's a great way to create colorful scarves with no "floats" or wrong side to the fabric.  We'll also be kitchener stitching the two sides together as a way of finishing the cowl - so it a great refresher for those not yet comfortable with that technique.

Required Supplies

  • 400 yards of Worsted Weight Wool (such as Madeline Tosh MerinoAnzula For Better or Worsted, or Manos Maxima):  +/- 200 yards for Main Color, and +/- 200 yards for Contrast Color (choosing two colors that have a high contrast to each other is most ideal for working this pattern)
  • US #5, 16" circular knitting needles or size needed to obtain gauge (you will need a smaller needle than you would normally use for worsted weight because having both sides of the fabric on the needles can stretch the sides slightly.)
  • stitch markers
  • tapestry needle for weaving in ends

The Sprout Cowl Pattern is provided to students in class.

Intro to Short Rows - Bandana Cowl

$100 for 4 Hours of Instruction

As spring quickly approaches, winter scarves and cowls can be too heavy and warm to wear everyday. The bandana cowl is a great alternative.  It's simple, light, and easy to learn. During this class, you will learn the essentials of reading and understanding a knitting gauge (both stitches and rows!). This quick knit project is also a great introduction to short rows, a method of working stitches back and forth to create triangles or darts in knitwear.  By the end of the class, you will master new techniques and will have a new versatile cowl to keep you warm during cool summer nights.

Required Supplies

This cowl uses approximately 100 - 130 yards and would be stunning made out of many of Purl Soho's yarns.

Here are some beautiful options. Please choose one:

  • 1 skein Manos Del Uruguay's Maxima, 100% Extrafine Merino
  • 1 skein Cascade's Eco Cloud, 70% Undyed Merino Wool and 30% Undyed Baby Alpaca
  • 1 skein Swans Island Bulky, naturally dyed colors are 100% Organic Merino and undyed colors are 85% Organic Merino and 15% Alpaca.
  • 2 skeins Blue Sky's Techno, 68% Baby Alpaca , 10% Extra Fine Merino, 22% Silk.
  • 2 skeins of Jade Sapphire's 8 Ply Cashmere, 100% Mongolian Cashmere.

Intermediate Knitting - Silken Short Row Sweater

$200 for 8 Hours of Instruction

Our Silken Short Row Sweater is a summertime ode to the grace and distinction of a bit of bare back. Knit in one piece, this wrap of a sweater is a half moon shape, folded around to create a sweeping crisscross in the back. A large portion of this sweater is knit in what is known as 'short rows'. Short Rows shape everything from bust darts to ear flaps and while Short Rows tend to strike fear into the hearts of the uninitiated, they shouldn't! A Short Row is just that: a row that you don't knit to the end of the needle. In this class you will learn how to work back and forth, turning the work part way through each row instead of continuing to the end of the needle. Join us for this "knit-along" style class to create a luxurious Silken Short Row Sweater!

This is an intermediate level class. Students should be comfortable with knitting basics, working in the round, as well as working increases/decreases.

By using Koigu's KPM Needlepoint yarn for the stripes, with just 11 yards to a skein and over a hundred colors to choose from, you can indulge in all sorts of color play and creative experimentation. Treat yourself to a cozy afternoon of crochet with whatever colors are on your mind!

In this class, you will learn how to: create a foundation chain, make a single crochet stitch, join additional colors of yarn and seam the hand warmers together.  Ideal for crochet beginners!

Please have your supplies prepared and your yarn wound into a ball before the start of the workshop.

Required Supplies

NOTES ON THE MATERIALS:

  • To make a pair of basic hand warmers without stripes you only need one skein of the KPM. You could also use 1 skein of the KPM Needlepoint Yarn to crochet the hand warmers together with a contrasting color.
  • To create your own stripe patterns keep in mind that each skein of KPM Needlepoint Yarn makes 7 rows as long as you don't cut extravagant tails. Keep them about 2 inches long to be on the safe side.

Quilt Blocks - Courthouse Steps

$75 for 3 Hours of Instruction

Learn how to create a traditional quilt block called "Courthouse Steps" which takes its name from the stepped pattern it makes. This block is a variation of a log cabin block, but it's pieced in a slightly different manner.
This project is very open in terms of materials, and it's a great way to experiment with color, and to create light and shadow effects. Students will work on their rotary cutting and precision piecing skills while learning variations on this fun, traditional block pattern.

Quilt Blocks - Flying Geese

$100 for 4 Hours of Instruction

The Flying Geese design is a beautiful traditional quilt pattern made up of centered triangles surrounded by two corner triangles. The evocative name comes from the center triangle's shape which ends up looking like a flock of geese flying in a V formation. Flying geese can be used alone, as in the mini quilt, or incorporated into borders or other quilt patterns and designs. Students will practice their machine piecing and rotary cutting skills with this pattern, mastering triangles during the course of this workshop.

Quilt Blocks - Churn Dash

$125 for 5 Hours of Instruction

The churn dash pattern incorporates the two basic building blocks of quiltmaking - squares and triangles, into one classic block pattern. This is a great project if you've just started quilting and want to try your hand at a slightly more complicated block. The contrasts between the shapes creates play between the foreground and background, and secondary patterns are formed at the intersection of the blocks. The fun is in the color play for this block, and variations are unlimited. Students will learn techniques for making triangles and tips on precise machine piecing.

Her stitched drawings on fabric explore issues of identity through thinly veiled metaphors utilizing old fashioned imagery and double entendres. She learned how to embroider in college in a feminist art history class, and has been inspired by the history of American needlework ever since. Approaching the technique of embroidery as a way of drawing, Ringquist has taught hundreds of people new ways of making marks on fabric through classes and workshops around the country.

In 2005, Rebecca was awarded an Illinois Arts Council Fellowship. Her work has since been exhibited at the Hyde Park Art Center, The California Polytechnic University, ARC Gallery, Fraction Workspace, Northern Illinois University, The Textile Art Center in Brooklyn, Packer Schopf Gallery, Pop tArt Gallery, and the Museum of Art and Design in NYC.

Laila Grainawi

Laila Grainawi is fiber artist with a strong love of textures. When she's not coordinating all the classes & events here at Purl Soho, she is stirring the dyepots and creating handmade treasures from scratch for her small shop, Lai Grai.

Laila has always dabbled in the arts from a young age. She grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, with two engineers for parents, which founded her strong desire to learn about how things work.  She learned how to knit while she was in college at Maryland Institute College of Art, where she graduated with a BFA in Interdisciplinary Sculpture.

While studying art, she became completely hooked on the artisian hand skills required to make beautiful and functional pieces.  With the ability to spin her own yarn, dye her own fibers, drum card and process the fleeces from the sheep herself, it is oh-so-difficult to choose only one fiber art love!

Her work has been featured in the book The Complete Guide to Spinning Yarn, Knit Today Magazine, Venus Zine and many more wonderful publications + blogs!
