Whit's Knits: Fuzzy Easter Chicks and Mini Easter Eggs

It's been a very long, very snowy winter in New York and, so, Easter is especially welcome to me this year. I can't wait for a holiday that celebrates spring's harbingers: baby chicks and lambs, budding daffodils, the bright colors of a warm, sunny day. To get the feeling started early, I made these Fuzzy Easter Chicks and Mini Easter Eggs. They fill me with anticipation and the hope that, yes, spring will actually come.  I was excited to use Alchemy Yarn's latest inspiration called Kozmos. A fascinating blend of silk, mohair, cotton and wool, this yarn is unlike any other. Each yarn absorbs the dye differently, creating a complex depth of color that seems to shimmer and glow. The diaphanous halo of sweet fuzziness is perfect for the creation of a baby chick.

Happy Easter! --Whitney

Colorful Crafting with Jen: Big Red Bobbi Bear

If you're a faithful reader of The Purl Bee, you may remember that a few weeks ago we mentioned that we're having a baby boom at Purl Soho.  I'm very excited to say that I happen to be one of the very happy Purl Soho-Mother's-To-Be! When I started thinking about knitting for my baby, I didn't have to think very hard about what my first project for my little one would be. I have always loved the Bobbi Bear (and the Baby Bobbi Bear) pattern from Blue Sky Alpacas because it's so big (almost 2 feet tall!) which makes it great to cuddle with, plus the pattern is very well written, very quick and it doesn't involve a lot of sewing up.

Molly's Sketchbook: Sashiko Mini Tote (or Apron) Kit

Sashiko is a Japanese embroidery technique that is simple to learn and beautiful to look at. Even though it's a craft that's been around for a very long time, the traditional designs are very clean and graphic, and I love how modern they seem.  Sashiko combines the quick, hands-on creativity of embroidery with a calming, meditative quality as well. I learned about Sashiko and how to do it last year by reading Mari's helpful Sashiko Tutorial on The Purl Bee and I've been wanting to do more ever since!

Whit's Knits: The Wonderful Wallaby!

One of my all time favorite patterns is The Wonderful Wallaby by Cottage Creations. While it's true that the Wallaby is cozy and classic and the construction is beautifully engineered, the thing that makes this pattern my favorite is the charm and accessibility of the writing and illustrations.

Molly's Sketchbook: Very Pretty Japanese Handbag

This bag handle and pattern came to us with only Japanese instructions. With a little help I was able to get it  translated and share it all with you. Its pretty shape and cheery colors make it the perfect thing to sew in anticipation of Spring!
