Pattern for Dragon Scale Mitts

NOTES

Don't worry, it's simpler than it looks.  In fact, once you've knitted a few rounds you'll enjoy watching the rhythmic pattern emerge.  If you're wondering about some of the technical terms used in this pattern, check this out:

M1                Increase Tutorial
ssk               Decrease Tutorial
gauge            Swatch Tutorial
other terms     Knit+Crochet Glossary

GAUGE

7 stitches per inch in Dragon Scale stitch pattern (To knit a gauge swatch, use the Dragon Scale stitch pattern below, Rounds 1 - 12)

CUFF

CO 48 stitches. Join into a round; be careful not to twist the stitches.
Purl 2 rounds, Knit 1 round.

Round 12:  Knit.

Repeat pattern rows 1 - 8.

BEGIN THUMB GUSSET INCREASE

Repeat Round 9, but a little different: *K1, M1, K5, ssk, K2, K2tog, K2, M1, K1*  K1, M1, K2, ssk, K2, K2tog, K5, M1, K1, repeat section between **, [K1, place marker, M1, K1, M1, place marker, K1].  50 stitches total.

Continue in Dragon Scale Stitch Pattern, inserting the phrase between the brackets [], at the end of each odd-numbered round (substituting the bracketed phrase for the final "K3"). Continue until there are 17 stitches between the ring markers, ending with a pattern round. 65 stitches.

Knit one round.

Place 17 thumb stitches on a holder.  These are the 17 stitches at the end of the last round. Rejoin the round; bridge the gap between the right and left sides of the thumb by casting on one stitch. 49 stitches.

TOP OF MITT

Continue in stitch pattern, ending with Round 12.

THUMB

Pick up 17 stitches from the holder, plus one stitch on either side of the thumb gusset. 19 stitches.

Knit 3 rounds.

Purl 2 rounds.

Bind off loosely.

Try it on!

There's a mistake in row 11 of the dragon scale stitch pattern. The section not between the ** should read: K1, M1, K3, ssk, K2tog, K6, M1, K1.

Oops! You are right. The pattern above now reads correctly. Thanks Meryl!

These are sooooo cute. I'm almost finished with a pair in pink alpaca, and I'm going to make another one! Thanks for the pattern!

Having great luck so far on the pattern. The thumb gusset directions are a bit confusing however...you do mean M1 after the first marker, then M1 before the 2nd marker, right? Otherwise you can't repeat what is in the brackets each row. At first I thought that you M1 between every knit stitch, then I figured out that was wrong...

These are really lovely - I'll be knitting myself a pair of these soon. Thanks for the pattern

Love the pattern! I have a question regarding the thumb gusset increase section. You have 49 stitches for the stitch pattern (previously there were 48). Should I now K4 instead of K3 at the ends of the pattern rows?

I would also love to know the answer to Leslie's question about that new 49th stitch...Should we k4 stitches at the end of the round, instead of k3? Thanks.

I tried twice, and row 5 doesn't seem to be working. Is there a mistake in the pattern? What am I doing wrong?

Here is a chart that I found useful for the dragon stitch...it may be easier to follow than the written directions...

Hi Kathleen,
We double checked the pattern but have not found any errors. If you describe the problem you're having in detail we'll be happy to help you out.

I finally figured it out! It helped to put 15 stitches on needles 1 and 2, and 18 stitches on needle 3, since the dragon stitch.

Thanks for checking on my progress - they turned out beautifully, and I will be making more for Christmas gifts!

Nikki -- I love this pattern, it's fun and beautiful. I am working on the beginning of my second pair.

My question though: at the thumb gusset, how is it possible to end up with 65 stitches, after coming to 17 between the stitch markers? Shouldn't there be 45 + 19? Obviously, as I've made this passage twice already, I've found a way around it -- both times I had to make another stitch because I come up short. I would like to understand why this is happening and write my correction in, instead of winging it!

Another question: to adjust this pattern for a man's hand, where would I make the increase for the thumb, and how much? Can you help with that?

Thanks --
Ravenna
