Whit's Knits: Evening Shrug

ESalone.jpg

Have you knit with bamboo yet? It's a real treat! Shiny and soft like silk, but durable like linen, bamboo is also an environmentally enlightened choice. As the world's fastest growing plant, bamboo is a wonderful sustainable resource. Harvesting the cellulose needed to make yarn doesn't even kill the plant. In fact, a few short months later, it's ready to be harvested again. Also, bamboo absorbs almost five times the amount of greenhouse gasses and makes 35% more oxygen than an equivalent grove of trees. Fresh air! Plus bamboo yarn is biodegradable, naturally antibacterial, and helps protect against UV rays. Good stuff!

This is a really easy shrug to knit, so join in, beginners! -Whitney

Wow, so beautiful! I wish I had time to knit it before May 4, when I have to go to a formal event being held outside. I've never knit on circulars, so I'm a bit nervous, but I'm definitely going to be making this gorgeous thing soon. Thank you for posting this (and all) tutorials.

I've searched for a shrug that my daughter (age 28) will wear for a long time. I sent this picture to her, because I like it, and finally, she loved a shrug! This one! It's pretty!

It just gets better, I have some bamboo that I haven't used yet not having found a pattern I really liked. You have answered a prayer. Many many thanks

Thank you for this great pattern and intro to a fabulous yarn! I really like the lace cuffs - easy to knit, but very striking! This knits up in no time at all (I knit one sleeve in 6hrs on the way to the wedding where I was to wear this shrug) and the DIY measurements all worked out. I would definitely recommend it even for near-beginners.

Hi,
How are the small diameter cuffs (I'm assuming the average wrist is 7" or so) knitted in such a tight closed cylinder with one 12" circular needle? Doesn't seem physically possible. Wouldn't you need double pointed needles or Cat Bordi's method using 2 circular needles? Please explain how to do this, because I'm do not understand.
thanks,
cynthia

Hi Cynthia,
It is a tight fit, but you can do it, especially because of the lace at the bottom, which does not fit tight around the wrist but instead drapes loosely. If you prefer its perfectly acceptable to do it with double points or with two circulars too.
Good luck!
