Announcing The BIG Move: We're Moving our New York shops to a BIGGER Space in Soho!

We have a BIG announcement that we are very excited to share with you:  We're combining our two teeny-tiny Soho New York Shops, Purl and Purl Patchwork into one brand new, BIG, beautiful store, also in Soho, this April!

The new space is just a few blocks away from where we are now, at 459 Broome Street between Greene and Mercer.  We'll be right next to some other great New York institutions such as Kate Spade, Gourmet Garage, Ochre and Rudy's Music, just to name a few.

Here is a map from Google that shows walking directions from our shops on Sullivan Street to our new store on Broome Street.

Any of you who have visited Purl or Purl Patchwork in New York will know when we say that our current locations are small, we aren't kidding!  The floor plans pictured above are actual to-scale representations of our shops right now compared with our new store front (seriously!).  Customers often express to us that they wish we had more room to help them with their creative projects.  Believe us when we say we have long shared that wish, so we're absolutely thrilled that we'll finally be able to provide some breathing room and space for all of your creative endeavors. Our new shop will be filled with all of the beautiful materials you have come to know and love as much as we do, as well as lots of new and exciting things we've never had room for. We're even going to have a dedicated classroom!

We have a lot of work to do in the new space before we move in, as you can see in the images above.  On the left is the new space as it currently looks, to the right is an architectural rendering of what is to come.  We're very pleased to have our friends, Architect Nick Robertson from Piano Nobile  and Carpenter James O'Malley from Brooklyn Design + Fabrication collaborating with us again to create a welcoming, spacious, functional and beautiful interior (they did all of the work inside of Purl Patchwork several years ago).

While we couldn't be more excited about The BIG Move, we love our home on Sullivan Street so leaving our two cozy little stores will be bittersweet. We are especially going to miss our great neighbors and the warm feeling of community that this amazing block has provided over the past 8 years. It is our great hope that our new location will foster the same spirit of creativity and sense of home that our current store fronts do!

The BIG Move is taking place in mid-April 2010.   In the meantime, our shops on Sullivan Street will be open for business and filled to the brim with all of the lovely yarns and fabrics we've always had.   As we get closer to the actual BIG day we'll provide you with specific dates of the move, information on our BIG Move prizes, and details about our grand opening party.  You can keep up to date by clicking The BIG Move button on the top right of any page. Stay tuned!

Congratulations! I'm from Australia so I'll likely never see the actual shop, but it's an exciting move for you and it sounds so much more convenient for everyone.

I loved visiting your little jewel of a shop when I was in town last year, but I can appreciate the desire for more space. Congratulations! I hope to be back with my daughter this summer.

I'm glad to see you won't be moving far. I've always made a point of going to the Sullivan St. Bakery and Once Upon a Tart before going to your stores. It made for a perfect day. Good luck.

I wish I could live in New York. I would be a very good customer.
Some day I will go and the first thing I want to do is visit your store. I love your blog and your tutorials, they are so inspiring. Keep that way and congratulations!!

So excited for the new shop! I, too (like Bobbi), usually visit the local bakeries on Sullivan when I stop by Purl so I'm happy that you found space in Soho. There's nothing better than a walk through the neighborhood with some new fabric and a sweet treat. Congratulations!

Congratulations! I remember when your first opened - I was working in Soho and absolutely thrilled to have a yarn shop a) on the way home, b) stocked with yarn I wanted and c) staffed by nice, helpful people (a rare trinity in yarn stores). I taught several of my co-workers how to knit that winter.

I've missed you since I've moved to the 'burbs (although I do order online) and on the rare occasions I'm in NYC, I'm leery of bringing my grabby toddler into the small store (she's safe at Patchwork!), so I'm thrilled that your moving into a bigger space! And I'm sure that you'll bring that cozy little atmosphere right with you. Can't wait to see it!

Wow, congratulations on the new space! It looks amazing. I can't imagine how excited you all are to have all that room to spread out and have more classroom space.

How exciting! I love the current stores, but I do hate stepping on people's toes as we all try to squeeze into the shop. Can't wait to see the new space!

That is so exciting! I visited your stores in September last year and while I can see why you need the extra space I'm glad I had the chance to see what the original stores are like. And I'll look forward to visiting your new digs next time I'm in New York.

At my knitting group meeting today here in PA we were planning our visit to Purl Soho Shops for March 20. Hope we won't catch you mid move. Regardless, congratulations. It is so satisfying to know that a shop like yours, that just oozes creativity and all that is the best of craft ,thrives. I hope your move is seamless and painless.

I'm very happy for yall-- you make such good use of the small space you have now, I'm sure you must be very excited about the new possibilities. Though I can't help feeling a little sad,..I'll miss swinging open the single wood doors and stepping into the little jewel box Sullivan Street stores on rainy afternoons or early evenings. There is something very special and intimately-scaled about Sullivan Street. Bittersweet indeed. But to end on a happy note-- it will be great to not have to put it in reverse mid-yarn-ogling when someone needs to get by! And every single one of you in both stores is so charming, sweet, talented, and cute that you will make any place wonderful.
