Whit's Knits: John's Favorite Bucket Hat

Page's stepfather, John, swears by his LL Bean original of this hat. After twenty five years, it's still his favorite, but, honestly, it's gotten a little, shall we say, worn. Hopefully he'll be able to attach himself to this modern version of his old standby!

And, it's not just for dads. Timeless design isn't just about decades gone by; it's also about crossing ages and cultures. Timeless design is for everyone!

A thick and cozy blend of wool and alpaca, this hat's toasty and stylish. It's super quick to whip up, but, if John is any indication, the love lasts!  Enjoy! -- Whitney

Materials

  • 1 skein of Shibui Knit's Highland Wool Alpaca, 80% Peruvian Wool and 20% Alpaca. This color is "Wasabi". One skein is enough to make two hats.
  • A removable stitch marker (or a safety pin or paper clip).

The Pattern

Chain 3 and slip stitch into the first chain to make a ring.

Round 1: Chain 1, 6 single crochet (sc) into the ring.

Note: Mark the first stitch of the next round with a removable marker. Make sure to reposition the marker at the beginning of each round to mark the new first stitch.

Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch. (12 stitches)

Round 3: Repeat Round 2. (24 stitches)

Round 4: *1 sc in next 3 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch, repeat from * to end of round. (30 stitches)

Round 5: *2 sc in next stitch, 1 sc in next 4 stitches, repeat from * to end of round. (36 stitches)

Round 6: 1 sc in each stitch.

Round 7: *1 sc in next 5 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch, repeat from * to end of round. (42 stitches)

Rounds 8 and 9: 1 sc in each stitch.

Round 10: *2 sc in next stitch, 1 sc in next 6 stitches, repeat from * to end of round. (48 stitches)

Rounds 11-13: 1 sc in each stitch.

Round 14: *1 sc in next 7 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch, repeat from * to end of round. (54 stitches)

Rounds 15-17: 1 sc in each stitch.

Round 18: *2 sc in next stitch, 1 sc in next 8 stitches, repeat from * to end of round. (60 stitches)

Rounds 19 and 20: 1 sc in each stitch.

Does your hat look like this so far? I hope so!

Round 21: *1 sc in next 5 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch, repeat from * to end of round. (70 stitches)

Round 22: 1 sc in each stitch.

Round 23: *2 sc in next stitch, 1 sc in next 6 stitches, repeat from * to end of round. (80 stitches)

Rounds 24-27: 1 sc in each stitch.

Round 28: Slip stitch in each stitch.

Ta da!

oh no! first the girl's dress and now this hat! I might actually have to put down my knitting needles and learn how to crochet! But until then, please give us some juicy fall knits!

I love this hat. Too bad I don't know how to crochet. Can this be converted to a knitting pattern?
