The Purl Frog

frog13.jpg

We named these amiable amphibians Rosemarie and Hilaire, after the friendly neighbor who shared the pattern with us, and the author of the poem that accompanied the pattern.  Rosemarie instructed us to use mung beans as the stuffing; the simple child's rhyme, composed by British author Hilaire Belloc, tells us how to treat our new friends:

The Frog

Be kind and tender to the Frog,
And do not call him names,
As "Slimy skin," or "Polly-wog,"
Or likewise "Ugly James,"
Or "Gap-a-grin," or "Toad-gone-wrong,"
Or "Bill Bandy-knees":
The Frog is justly sensitive
To epithets like these.

No animal will more repay
A treatment kind and fair,
At least so lonely people say
Who keep a frog (and by the way,
they are extremely rare).

Have just finished the fourth frog. Found using the sew first and cut later technique to be the best. So far have used as filling dried orange lentils - which works out well. Dried split peas which seems to be the best and a combo of the two which seems better than lentils alone, but not as good as the peas.

These are too cute! I wanted to make these with the Kokka Treffle frog print pattern, but do not know if that fabric is too stiff.....any ideas?

Dear Christian,
I think the fabric might be a little stiff for this project, though I wonder if you made it larger if it would work? Maybe if you wash and dry the fabric a few times before using it it will soften up a bit too? --Joelle

The pattern is a little bit small. it's hard to turn it rightside out when finished sewing it. otherwise, it's very cute!

Frogs are very special, yes, I would never call them names. I love to listen to them on summertime nights and know that they are taking a bite out of the mosquito population.

CUTE!
