Whit's Knits: Baby Bloomers

BBgiacomo.jpg

Page's daughter, Coco, has been wearing a vintage pair of these adorable cotton bloomers for years. First, she wore them over her diapers. Then the bloomers grew right along with Coco into her toddlerhood, where she now wears them as shorts.

I decided to make my friend Giacomo a similar pair. Giacomo's mom, Giovanna, loves them because they remind her of old photographs of her father as a little boy in Milan wearing exactly the same shorts. Some designs are just timeless!

Sunday July 13th from 6:15- 8:15pm

We are also offering a Friday night lab with Phyllis (machine sewing) or Cassandra (hand sewing) where you can come in to finish your projects and use our machines or get some hand sewing advice.

Patchwork Open Lab with Phyllis or Cassandra

Have a project you haven't finished? Need a space to cut a big pattern? Come and use our sewing machines and cutting tables at our open lab. Phyllis will be there to answer simple questions and make sure everything goes great with your machine (but not to give detailed lessons). So make some time on a Friday night to finish that quilt, bag or softie already!

The last Friday of every month will be reserved for hand sewing and overseen by Cassandra . $30

Molly's Sketchbook: Quick Bias Tape Bib

bib3

linentape.jpg

This little bib is the sweetest, quickest baby shower gift. It's made out of Michael Miller Organic Fleece so it's as absorbent as it is soft. The new Kokka Haikara makes a pretty and functional crumb catcher pocket. Best of all the whole thing comes together in less than an hour by using our new Captain 88 Linen Bias Tape from Japan.  Before we got in this bias tape I thought I would never like pre-made bias tape. I didn't know you could find it in pretty colors or natural fibers. But this bias tape is 100% linen and comes in a lovely, soft palette.

This project is so easy and satisfying to make that you might end up making more than one! If you'd like to give it a try you can follow along with my Quick Bias Tape Bib Project Journal. --Molly

Whit's Knits: Stars + Stripes Felted Hot Pads

4thbothfinal.jpg

Whatever our politics, I think we can all agree that America really lucked out in the flag department. Our flag just embodies great design. It's bold and distinctive and jaunty. It's happy, but not insipid; spunky, but not undignified. I think it perfectly suits us as a country.

This Fourth of July, I'm celebrating the fresh graphics of the American flag with some flag-inspired hot pads. Your Fourth of July barbeque may be an ideal place to debut them, but they'll certainly fulfill their function year round! The striped hot pad is very easy, a great start for beginners. And the star version is a good a place to either learn or to perfect intarsia techniques with our new Intarsia Knitting Tutorial.

Molly's Sketchbook: Fourth of July BBQ Apron

apronwoman.jpg

The basic idea behind this one-size-fits-(almost)-all adjustable apron came from an apron my parents have. I've always liked it because I can get it to fit exactly the way I want it to fit. The adjustable tie is such a simple concept yet it makes for an apron that fits almost anyone, men, women, short and tall.  Best of all this project is very quick! (The whole thing took me about 4 hours.)

I used upholstery weight Echino fabric which makes the final apron sturdy enough for barbecuing and the bold striped print is a modern, graphic take on the traditional red, white and blue motif. It would be a great gift for any grill master or mistress on this Fourth of July. Visit my Forth of July BBQ Apron Project Journal to make one of your own! Happy Barbecuing! --Molly
