Surprise Bonnet

surprise hat.jpg
surprise hat 2Zimmermania continues! Last week we showed you Whitney's Baby Surprise Jacket, a cheerful interpretation of Elizabeth Zimmermann's classic pattern, in Joelle's Jacket and Pants Project Journal. Once the Baby Surprise Jacket became a big hit back in the 70's, Zimmermann created a delighful trio of patterns to accompany it: a bunting, a pair of booties, and a bonnet.

Whitney used the same type of yarn, Koigu KPM, for her Bonnet as for her Jacket, with great results. The bright colors compliment each other perfectly; robin's egg, clementine, cheddar, and azure. She omitted the hood, leaving this nice fishtail detail at the back.

Has anyone else modified the Baby Surprise Bonnet, bunting, or booties for bigger babies?  All three patterns can be found alongside the Surprise Jacket in The Opinionated Knitter.

Is the hat the baby size as in the book or how did you adjust to make it bigger?

I love it. I've been looking for baby projects that lend themselves to variegated sock yarns. The colorways are so beautiful now.
