Quilting with Embroidery Thread
Isabelle is working on another Quarter Quilt, a miniature quilt that is a fast, fun, sketchbook page of quilting ideas. This time, she set out quilting around the edges of Amy Butler's Blue Coriander print. She began with standard hand-quilting thread, which is coated to prevent tangling (thank goodness!).
She loved the light pink color, but the wobbily little stitches seemed to disappear between the bright blue leaves and lemon background. Not only did she need a brighter color, but Isabelle thought a thicker, more substantial thread
would make a greater impact. She chose a very, very bright red embroidery thread, and the results were instant!
Embroidery thread is a great substitute for quilting thread, especially with freeform quilting, strong geometric patterns, and high contrast fabrics. We recommend it for projects that could use some embellishment, and for quilters who want to showcase their stitching style. Isabelle quilts with an embroidery needle, which is a bit bigger than a quilting needle.
