Gee's Bend Quilts Stamps Introduced Today!

gee stamps.jpg

Possibly the best stamps ever released by the US Post Office (in our humble opinion), The Quilts of Gee's Bend Collection makes a vibrant addition to any envelope.  We might even use them to decorate the wrapping on our next handmade gift. You can order your own set of Gee's Bend Stamps from the USPS website.

Gee's Bend is a small Alabama community geographically isolated by a winding river.  The population are primarily decended from former slaves who worked the land for plantation owners in the nineteenth century and as share croppers for most of the twentieth century.  Their self-sufficience was born of this hard-laboring life, and it yielded incredible creativity, resourcefulness, and spirit.  To learn more about the quilters themselves, their work, and their community, visit their excellent website.

Thank you so much for bringing awareness to these amazing stamps. I can't wait to purchase these for all of my correspondence. Sometimes, it's the small things that make a big impact.

I'm making Denyse Schmidt's quilted "dis-cards" stationery set for a couple people as Christmas gifts, and I intend to include a sheet of these stamps along with the gift.

The exhibition of Gee's Bend Quilt is truly beautiful and inspiring! I was fortunate to see the exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston at the beginning of August, and see now the Austin Museum of Art is now also featuring the Gee's Bend works through November 5th. See the exhibition and don't miss the documentary. I am so pleased the postal service has issued these artistic and rememberable stamps.
