Jen's Tilli Tomas Silk Scarf

Jen's friend Tricia had her eye on two different styles of Tilli Tomas Spun Silk: Salt and Pepper with orange seed beads and Disco Lights with lime sequins.  She wanted a scarf and left the rest up to Jen. tilli-tomas-skeins.jpg

Jen tucked the silk away in the "yarn for special projects" section of her stash and searched for just the right stitch.  When Tricia's birthday came around earlier this month, Jen created a dazzling basket weave stitch scarf for her friend.

photo Basket weave stitch is a beautiful choice for silk yarn for a couple of reasons:  a) it gives silk some structure with strong stitches; b) each detailed stitch benefits from silk's shiny texture; and c)it is a reversible stitch that looks good on the front and the back!

Here's how she did it:

Using US size 9 needles, cast on 20 stitches. Jen mixed sequins and beads by knitting with both strands at once. The strands will naturally wind around each other as they are pulled from the ball.

Rows 1 and 3:  K4, P4, K4, P4, K4.

Row 2 and 4:  P4, K4, P4, K4, P4.

Rows 5 and 7: repeat Rows 2 and 4.

Rows 6 and 8:  repeat Rows 1 and 3.

Repeat Rows 1 - 8.

The basketweave stitch looks lovely with the two Tilli Tomas yarns. I do have a question regarding washing after it was completed. Did you wash the scarf in cool water or did you dry clean the item? I know some silk garments can be handwashed in cool water while others cannot.
Thanks.

Dear Sue,
We recommend handwashing in cool water. Use a gentle detergent like baby shampoo.

Wow that is very pretty! I have been wanting to try something with silk - did this project just require two skeins? And do you just knit from both skeins at the same time (holding each strand together?) I have never tried that. Thanks

How many times should rows 1-8 be repeated. What length should the scarf be?

I really like this scarf - how many skeins of yarn are required for each color? I didn't see your reply to an earlier knitter on this subject. Thanks

Hi N,
Just one skein of each color for the scarf.
Enjoy!
