Book Review: Knitting New Scarves by Lynne Barr

knittingnewscarves475-1.jpg

Scarves are the alpha and omega of knitting:  the first and often the favorite form for knitters of all styles and experience.  This beautifully composed new book, Knitting New Scarves: 27 Distinctly Modern Designs, explores, indulges, and celebrates scarf knitting in every detail and stitch.  From one project to the next, the reader is caught up in lush materials, elegant stitch patterns, and innovative ideas.  Traditional techniques are combined with inventive new methods for surprising results! Without reinventing the wheel, author Lynne Barr reimagines classic patterns and simple techniques.  Even the Rib Stitch gets a new look!

We love the way these smart designs show off an array of all-natural fibers, from alpaca to merino and more! Hand-painted Kersti and luxurious Blue Sky Worsted are just two of the yarns that are featured. Each project has it's own personality: eye-catching, fancy, fun, elegant.

Here's a peek at some of those fabulous projects, in gorgeous photographs by Tyllie Barbosa (styled by our friend Kelly McKaig):

I bought this book immediately at the bookstore last week - it is wonderful! If you have a couple of skeins around or want to try that new yarn out - this is a wonderful book to help make those yarns into something really fabulous. Not to keen on only a couple of things but for the most part - a relaly useful book!

I just bought this book and I must say it is a fabulous book. Very informative and a great source of tecniques. I would have to say it rates right up there with Joelle's book. My all time favorite knitting book.

I absolutely love knitting scarves, reasons.... One size fits all, I love beautiful yarns in silks, wools, alpaca, and other fibers, and I can knit a beautiful scarf without breaking the bank, I can use beautiful intricate stitches on a small scale which is great for me and no two of my scarves are alike! And they are sophisticated to boot!! I will be getting this book right away!

This is the one knitting book I have seen in the past year or so that would truly get me excited about knitting again. It is all so pretty! Thanks for the review.

I think I have got more excited about this book than any other I can think of in a long time. Who would have thought a book on scarves could make me so inspired but there are techniques in here that are new to me and I consider myself to be an experienced knitter. I want to knit virtually everything in the book and take what I've learned into my everyday knitting. It even makes me want to design! I can't recommend it enough.

Knitting New Scarves by Lynne Barr is a truly wonderful book! She introduces knitters to techniques that make the reader aware of the possibilities of real innovation in design. I bought the book today and love it! Since I am only an average knitter this book really inspires me to get out of my rut and learn something. Thanks Lynne Barr.

I love this book and have knit two of the patterns already - Easy Wave and one of the short row wedges patterns. I have a question for you experts on the stacked blocks pattern. When changing colors, it says to bind off the remaining stitches, then to continue knitting. Makes no sense to me. If anyone can help, let me know.

Is there an error in Stacked Wedges? I just started this pattern. Rows 26-28 are all knit, then Rows 3-4 are all knit. This does not seem to match the photo.

An inspiring pattern book and beautifully designed.

Hi L.
I checked the errata page for the publisher but they don't list any corrections. I would recommend going to the following link and sending them an email. They'll be happy to let you know if there is a mistake in the pattern:
