NEW! Purl Color Wheel Quilt Custom Fabric Bundle!

Joelle's Color Wheel Quilt is one of our favorite projects from her new book, Last Minute Patchwork + Quilted Gifts.  It is a spectacular heirloom, a treat for the eyes, and a fun color experiment. We couldn't wait to get our hands on this incredible pattern and start picking out fabrics!

Luckily, the book includes templates for making the segments of the wheel as well as the background shapes and thorough details to help us along with its construction.  Joelle explains how she cut and assembled the fabric, including tips on chain-piecing the segments together.  That's all very helpful, but one question remains:

How do you choose all those colors? The gifted colorists at Purl Patchwork have created a brand new Color Wheel Fabric Bundle to help solve this dilemma!

The Color Wheel Fabric Bundle includes 52 bright and brilliant cotton prints from some of our favorite designers to make up the color wheel.  Each print is cut into fat eighths, or 9 x 22 inch rectangles which is enough fabric to assemble your own color wheel.

To complete the quilt, you'll also need 7.25 yards of white cotton fabric for the background, quilt back, and binding; template plastic, pattern paper, thread, and a fabric marker, which are not included.

Wow. This is brilliant! A quick question - is there enough of each fabric left over after making the quilt to tackle some of the other projects in the book, such as Kathy's lovely pencil roll? Or is the quantity just enough to make the quilt?

Do you know if this will be available up til Christmas? I'd love to make this quilt but on a student budget I would be pushing it. It'd be nice if I could wishlist it for my parents. LOL
October 7, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterBronwyn
Dear Meg,
There might be enough left over, depending on how carefully you cut your fabric. If you plan ahead in your cutting I would imagine you could get the pencil roll out of it and maybe Kelly's Pincushions too. --Joelle

Dear Bronwyn,
We will keep this item available, though as the fabrics go out of print so quickly it may be made up of different prints by the time christmas comes around. --Joelle

Fabulous idea! I love the quilt and these colors are all ones that I don't use. I think it would be great fun to work with different fabrics and the bundle will make it very easy. But I just tried to order and it looks like everyone else is thinking the same thing! I'll keep checking back.

Just want to say that I am really loving the Color Wheel quilt. It's pretty and practical.

A question: are these the actual fabrics used for the quilt shown in the book?
October 9, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterDiana
Dear Diana,
With a few exceptions, these are not the actual fabrics used in the book. Unfortunately, the fabrics go out of print so fast that many of them are no longer available. We selected the prints for the bundles to produce a quilt with a similar feeling. --Joelle

Thankyou for such beautiful things Joelle.

Is your book still available? I checked online and saw 0 in stock. I am new to quilting and am in awe of this quilt, going to by a bundle next week for this. If I can't purchase a book, are the instructions seperate to purchase? Would you say a beginner could tackle this lovely quilt?

I'm really wanting to order this, but see there are no bundles in stock! Are you planning to put together more?

I bought your new book and love the book. I was also wondering if you are planning to prepare more Color Wheel fabric bundles?

Have a wonderful holiday.

The color wheel quilt is so beautiful it makes me want to learn to quilt. But you've run out of color wheel bundles again! Will you be making more? Thanks.
February 22, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterLynna
Dear Lynna,
We're a little short staffed at the moment and these bundles take a long time to make. We'll be getting some done as time permits, hopefully soon! If you'd like to be notified when we do have some done send an email to our customer service address and they'll let you know as soon as we have them available.

While this is so beautiful, and I love everything in it.. Is it actually used for something other than keeping warm? I am new to this whole scene, and I think it's aesthetically wonderful-- just wondering if it had any real PURPOSE. Like helps you do something.. like a regular color wheel. Silly question I suppose..

November 15, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAntique Jewelry
Hi Molly-

This is s quilt and it's practical purpose is to keep you warm and to look beautiful, nothing more or less. Glad to hear you're getting into the world of crafting and sewing and thanks for the question.

I am planning on making this for my love for Christmas... So excited and a little nervous as it is my first real quilt project! Just wondering: what white fabric do you recommend using? And what color thread? White seems a little dauting as we have young children, but I do so love the way the color pops out!
November 16, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterLizzie
Hi Lizzie,
I recommend Kona Cotton for the white, the color "snow" is my favorite (cheerful and bright without being cold). For thread, a soft grey or dark off white is fine. Be sure to wash all of the fabrics before sewing the quilt and you'll be able to wash the finished quilt without fear.
Good luck!

You can find our Kona Cotton right here:
