Whit's Knits: 70's Ski Hat

adam.jpg

When I was a kid every guy I knew wore a hat like this. Triangular, striped and itchy. We've all softened a little in the last thirty years, so this updated version features an impossible-to-complain-about cashmere lining, which is easy once you learn how to do a provisional cast-on.

This Christmas I'm giving one to all of the men in my family. I can't wait to look around at them wearing their 70's Ski Hats, reminding me of how much I loved those times. To make your own 70's Ski Hat, you can visit my project journal.   --Whitney

Oooh I love the colors. These are fabulous. I don't know what it is about hats, but i love to knit them so much! Some people are sock knitters - I'm a hat knitter :)

Thanks for the pattern--I love the color choices! I also appreciate seeing it on a model to get an idea of how it looks on.

We certainly must be the same generation. Were the guys you knew named Mark and David and Bobby? Did they wear a lot of corduroys too? Anyway, thanks for the pattern! :-)

Thank you for this project journal...I'm so happy to see something for men! I always seem to get stumped thinking of things to stitch up for my husband, father, and brother, and would LOVE to see more ideas come from the purl bee. Sewing projects would be great too!

I was a skiier in Tahoe in the 70's going to Squaw with the gang...I sure do remember these hats! Now I am a Bostonian, but I think I will knit one of these and do a bit of California dreamin!

Hi I just made one of these hats using Cascade 220 yarn in a tweed so it is all one color. The directions are so easy to follow. I used baby alpaca yarn for the lining and it worked perfectly. Plan to make more of these hats.Thank you.

Hi,
My son is a flyfisher and has asked me knit him a hat with ear flaps 9 or shaped down over ears and a visor - have you come across any pattern like that. I Have been searching the net with no luck so far.
Love your hats.
