Doll Size Style

3dollquilts.jpg

Everywhere we look we see the sweetest miniature quilts in every style, color, and pattern! Doll-sized quilts are appealling to all levels of quilters because they are personal, unique, and versatile.  They can be as complicated or simple as you like.  They can be an experiment in color or stitching for a larger project.  They can hang on the wall, framed, or displayed on a table top, dresser, or even a doll's bed!   Think of them as sketches or masterpieces, quick diversions or labors of love.

If you'd like to try your hand at a doll quilt, here are a few resources:

Back in November, we shared a pattern for one of our Quarter Quilts, a doll quilt that requires only a fat quarter or two to complete (a fat quarter is an 18 x 22 inch rectangle of fabric cut from a 1/2 yard).  The Quarter Quilt is made from a whole piece of fabric, not pieced patchwork. Using whole cloth is a good starting place if you'd rather focus on decorative stitching rather than piecing.

For inspiration, you can find a king's ransom of doll quilts on the blogs and Flickr sites of many amazing crafters.

We especially love the ongoing project Hilary shares on Wee Wonderfuls:  to decorate the nursery with a wall full of handmade doll quilts from a variety of vintage and new fabrics.  As she notes in a post this week, you can make more than one in a day!

The Doll Quilt Swap Group is a wonderful collection to explore, even though all of the quilts have gone to their new homes. This stunner comes from Losabia.

Incredible color and stitching! We can't wait til the next Doll Quilt Swap starts! Check in with the Doll Quilt Swap blog for updates. Until then you can peruse the latest Whiplash Competition over at whipup.net.  They are fantastic!

The Doll Quilt Crazy Group on Flickr has nearly 100 members and a beautiful variety of quilts with appliqued, stitched, and embroidered details to pore over. The three quilts shown at top were contributed to the group by Soto Softies(top left), Small Fox in a Big World (right), and Knit One Quilt Too (bottom left).

We hope you'll try making your own doll quilt.  Please share it with us!
