Molly's Sketchbook: New Liberty of London + Amy Butler's "Anna Tunic"

libertyforest.jpg

As you may already know, we at Purl Patchwork LOVE Liberty of London fabric. So we are very happy to announce the arrival of the new spring Tana Lawn collection. The quality of the fabric's printing as well as it's silk like texture make the 100% Cotton Tana Lawn a joy to look at, touch, and work with. The prints range from sweet and classic to bright and modern.  In addition to the image above, here are a few of my favorites from the new collection:

Every time we get a new shipment of Liberty I vow that I will make something fabulous out of it: bed pillows, a quilt, a shirt... the list of my would be projects is endless. What usually happens however is that I buy some and then hoard it, afraid that whatever I make won't measure up the the fabric's beauty.

Amy's patterns are so thorough and well written that I knew I could get through the project and be happy with the result and I was right! The Anna Tunic is stylish and simple, the perfect combination for those of us who are just learning (or re-learning) how to sew our own garments.

I decided to use the lovely Navy Yann print. It's classic yet high contrast and graphic. I was also taken by the deep indigo colors of the floral print.

I honestly can't recommend this pattern and fabric enough. I chose to do the mini dress version of the pattern. It's fully lined (I used the ultra soft Moda Muslin in White for the lining) and has great details like the shank button yoke in the back.

I am by no means an expert at sewing clothes (in fact my last attempt was a disaster) but by just following the well illustrated directions I was able to learn so many new things.  Plus I was able to make something I'm really proud of.

Really cute and I liked the way you wrote the story. We got to see the inspiration and then the final project. I especially love the unexpected red buttons. You look great!

I love it, it's so pretty. Just wondering, the pattern calls for 44" wide fabric and the Liberty is 53" wide - did you need the same amount, or were you able to use less fabric? Thanks!

Hi Phoebe-
I did need less fabric. It called for 2 7/8th yards and I only needed 2 with some left over. However, I made the smallest size and did the mini dress as opposed to the regular dress length. I also didn't make the belt or optional fabric flower. So I'd get at least 2 1/4 if you are making another size or length. Happy Sewing!- Molly

No wonder you're proud - your tunic is fantastic and I love the fabric too! I had a nightmare with a pattern last week and so much admiration that you pulled it off so beautifully, when you don't normally like them either!

I love the top pink Tana Lawn fabric. There's a preview of the new Amy Butler fabrics on her site now and it reminds me of one I saw on there. Both perfect...so maybe both will end up being essential purchases!

New Liberty of London? OMG...Yay!

This part you wrote: What usually happens however is that I buy some and then hoard it, afraid that whatever I make won't measure up the the fabric's beauty -- ME TOO! How funny.

Your tunic dress is too cute. Great job and thanks for sharing. As always, I'm inspired.

The tunic looks great on you, Molly. Fabric reminds me of Puebla (Mexico) ceramic. Love the buttons too, does Purl sell them? Keep the ideas coming.

Your dress is awesome! So inspirational- I'm going to drag out my sewing machine. And I LOVE the unexpected red buttons- to echo someone else's post, does Purl sell the buttons?

Dear Sarah,
Molly used a covered button kit to make the red buttons. We will have them in the shop and online next week. --Joelle

Just found your blog. I love your dress. The fabric is beautiful and the red buttons. Wow! It's very inspiring. I am using my sewing machine more often right now, and I've been thinking about making some clothes, and this might just be my next project. Thanks!

I suppose that Liberty of London Forest fabric is pretty much lost in the sands of time, isnt it? I'd LOVE to find some.
