Molly's Sketchbook: Handmade Valentines

Beauty-1

I'm conflicted about Valentines Day. I'm all for the sentiment behind it but I feel a little weird about the commercialism and pressure it involves. With that said I love making valentines because they are the opposite of this.  Hand-made valentines are not mass produced and they involve no pressure: If one doesn't turn out to my liking I can just throw it away. Making cards is a quick and satisfying way to try out creative ideas, and you can use fabric, paper, yarn, crochet hooks, and a hole punch, anything but the kitchen sink!

 1.1

When I decided that I was going to make Valentines I knew I wanted to use both yarn and fabric and make two different kinds of cards.

croche

I wanted to crochet or knit the edge of one of them but my first attempts and mixing paper and yarn turned out looking like cheap doilies. I decided to keep it simple and do a basic crochet slip stitch along the edge of a heart shape. It looks unfussy and modern while still being recognizably handmade. I used the Rowan 4 Ply cotton because it's easy to use and comes in pretty colors. If  you want to make some too, check out my Crocheted Valentines project journal for the complete directions.

As for the fabric side of things, I knew I wanted to use the new Life Life collection from Yuwa. It's old fashioned colors and sentimental prints lend themselves perfectly to Valentines. In order to highlight the textile aspect of the card I used embroidery thread to sew the whole thing together. If you want create your own check out my Fabric Window Valentines project journal.

Enjoy! --Molly

Molly,I am just LOVING all the wonderful projects that you and Whitney have been creating for this blog. It's like a treasure trove of wonderful ideas. I get so excited when I see a new post. I reminds me of the French 100 ideas magazine many years ago. I couldn't wait for the newest edition. Martha Stewart Living also used to make me feel this way but in recent years I don't think her projects come close to what you show here. Thank you so, so much.
This valentine project is just great. Simple, beautiful and very do-able. I can't wait to get started after I attempt Whitney"s mary janes. your tunic and that incrediable quilt. GOSH, I'm going to be very busy!

Oh, they're just making me so happy. I love the first image, especially. Just lovely and, as you note above, modern-looking but still recognizably hand made.

These valentines are so sweet. My mother used to have handmade valentines ready for us on The Day and they gave me so much joy. I've tried to do the same for my kids.

Thanks so much for the great ideas..

Very cute! I also like that kids could very easily do most if not all of these.

I too loved your wonderfully sweet and accessible valentines -
but I think that I am all thumbs crafter re. your fabric card valentines!
after you make the heart stencil and trace it on the front of the card, how do you cut out the heart shape without bending the card stock?
This must be obvious but I've been pondering this conundrum for a couple of days now as I am longing to make these sweet valentines.
Thanks.

Hi Rachel-
Great question. What I did was punch a few little holes in the middle of the heart shape. That way I could fit the tip of my scissors in the punches and cut the heart from the inside. You could also use an exacto knife to cut the shape out instead of scissors. Have fun!- Molly

i tend to think valentine's day is corporate sham, but these are super cute! they remind me of grammar school, when we used to cut slots into shoeboxes so other kids could stuff their homemade valentines into them. so genuine and sweet!

These are so cute! My son would like to finger knit some borders to make some valentine's hearts like these, but we can't quite figure out how you made the crocheted piece stay on.
