Whit's Knits: Snuggle Sack (and Bonus Hat!)

I'm having a baby in early January (provided he cooperates!).  I've really been wondering how this little guy, after so many months in his perfectly cozy domicile, is going to handle the shock and brutality of a New York City winter. I've had a lot of worries (like, what if he's allergic to peanuts? what if I have to go to hockey games? what if he's not nice?), but this felt like one worry I could actually do something about!

I pictured a sack something like a sleeping bag that would employ some of the principles of swaddling, keeping the baby secure and making use of his own body heat. The end result is this Snuggle Sack. It's made out of a superwash (and super soft!) merino wool from Alchemy called Temple. I love that it is warm, breathable, and stretchy. And, luckily, Purl has an exciting new line of colorful YKK zippers so there's no fussing with lots of buttons or snaps, just zip, zip!

I can't wait to update everyone with a picture of my little dude all warm and snugly in his sack. In the meantime, if you'd like to make one for your own sweet cake or for someone else's (what an awesome present!), please visit my Snuggle Sack Project Journal. And if you'd like to learn how to sew a zipper into a knitted item, please visit my Zipper Tutorial! - Whitney

PS:  Please don't put your baby to sleep in this sack. The hood can be a real hazard! Just use it when you're awake and watching your baby.

I've never been a knitter but this is adorable! I'm sure it could be adapted as a sewing project. How neat would it be to make a sort of quilted snuggle sack! Congrats on your upcoming arrival, good luck with your last few months! :)

ooh, we all need a sack'n'hat! It's funny, my January baby in the Southern hemisphere just wore a nappy all January!

I love this! My baby just turned 2 but her first NYC winter I put her in a similar sack (purchased and not so adorable) and carried her in a sling the whole winter. It was fabulous and kept us both warm.

Squee! I am also due in January (with my first) and this pattern couldn't have come at a better time. Although my Ravelry queue is filled to the brim with baby knits, I think this may go on top!

The snuggle sack is so gorgeous.
What a lucky baby and might I add that this is the most gorgeous baby sack I've ever seen.
I love your choice in color and the knitting work is done so well.

Congratulations! It's so practical and pretty! By the way, I remember you posted fair isle color chart for "Giacomo's hat" and wonder if you used a software for that?

So fantastic! I don't know how to knit and I don't have a baby, but I am plotting ways to learn so I can pack it away for the future.

That is such a cool idea! I really like it a lot. And more than just the idea of it because the final piece looks amazing.
