Molly's Sketchbook: A Wedding Quilt

When I found out my dear friends Nicole and Marty were getting married I knew I had to make them a wedding quilt. Their wedding colors are festive and bright: yellows, reds, and pinks so I knew what colors I would use, but I didn't know what the pattern would be. Then one day I was walking around my parent's Berkeley, California neighborhood and saw the most beautiful quilt hanging on a wall through someone's window as I was admiring their garden ( I swear I wasn't just walking around peeping in windows!). I quickly drew the basic layout of the quilt (I still have no idea what the pattern is called) and got to work.

This is a great project for using up some of your favorite stash fabrics. I used a lot of fabrics I've been hoarding away for far too long (in some cases years...). I mixed my prints with bright Kona Cotton Solids and luminous Shot Cottons.

The clean modern design is simple to piece and a joy to see come together. To make the project even simpler, once I was done piecing the top I sent it away to our friends at Cranberry Quiltworks to be quilted and bound. It came back to me neatly finished and ready to be given away. My friends were thrilled with their quilt and I was so happy to give them something they'll have forever to remind them of their wedding. If you'd like to make one please visit my Wedding Quilt Project Journal! --Molly

Could this be called Bargello? The shape and placement of the pieces are essentially the same as Bargello which is a type of needlepoint. Whatever it's called, it's lovely!

Simply SENSATIONAL! I really admire the vibrants colors against the purity of the all that white, and the uncomplicated deisgn. It is contemporary, yet has a classic feel too...it short, it has everything! A cherished gift...well done, what a good friend! :o)

This is really beautiful work! The shot cotton is really ravishing here. And I love the little surprise of the orange binding.

Glad I'm not the only one who finds other people's interiors irresistible :)

very pretty! like someone wrote earlier, that looks very much like a bargello quilt. the only difference i see is that usually the strips are cut in varying widths for a bargello quilt. i found this:

This is almost a bargello design; in a larger scale but the same idea. It would certainly lend itself to strip piecing and go together quickly. Very nice work!

I loved your design so much it inspired me to make a holiday gift for my little sister in my sorority. I loved the idea of carrying a theme down a quilt so I did it with names - starting with our the charter member in our family and continued down the line.

Oh, and maybe it's cheating, i'm not sure - but since all my pieces were the same size, I went to Lowe's and got a piece of fiberglass cut to the the size i needed (for about $2 total) and then used it as a pattern so I didn't have to measure and mark 150 pieces - saved hours of time!

My daughter was married yesterday and we used the most wonderful cotton quilt fabrics for the wedding party. I have looking for a way to use the leftover fabric, thanks!
