Share Your World with the purl beehive!

Over the past few months we've been hard at work on a special project that we're very excited to share with you. Welcome to The Purl Beehive! The Purl Beehive is a brand new community of interconnected online craft journals that we've created with Squarespace, the renowned web publishing company that hosts The Purl Bee.

When you join The Purl Beehive, you'll start with this charming pre-designed online craft journal. We've created this template for you so that you'll be all set to get started sharing your world without having to fiddle with any tricky technical details. And when you're ready, it's simple to customize and change your journal to reflect your personal style. Your craft journal will become part of a larger group of other craft journals that are easily accessed through the Beehive's main site.

By joining The Purl Beehive, you become part of a community that's already humming with creative activity! Like a community garden The Purl Beehive is a space where you can cultivate your own creative plot, connect with your neighbors' plots and appreciate the beauty you've all produced together. In the Beehive, you'll find all sorts of creative and crafty people just like you, quilters and sewers, knitters and crocheters, weavers and dyers, gardeners and builders, painters and photographers. Anyone who loves beauty and inspiration is welcome!

Plus, each month (beginning in January) we'll feature a member of The Purl Beehive on The Purl Bee. We'll profile the crafter and highlight his or her creations for the entire Purl Bee audience. This is the perfect opportunity to generate discussion about your craft and get immediate feedback about your work, and inspire others to share their world, too.

Becoming a Busy Bee is really easy. Just go to The Purl Beehive's main page to sign up for a 14 day free trial and Squarespace will give you all the tools you'll need to start uploading text and photos! So if you're a busy bee, get started today! See what the buzz is all about!

This looks like a cool idea. I have a blog through wordpress but I sure would love to bee connected with the Purl Bee! Not only do I get great ideas from the crafters who make up Purl, but this would be great exposure to my blog too.

This is very interesting, but is it going to cost something?

This is so wonderful! Thank you! I am home from work not feeling too well and you have made my day :)

Very nicely designed! Is this similar to Ravelry?

I'm a big fan of this idea, but I wish I knew -- after the 14-day trial, what happens? How much does it cost?

This seems like a fun idea.I can't wait to see how this works...I already have a blog on blogger but am always looking for fun new things in this creative community.

Hi Justine,
After the 14 day trial its $8 per month to keep a basic blog with squarespace. You can find all of their info at this link:
http://www.squarespace.com/pricing/
We've been with Squarespace since 2006 and couldn't recommend them any higher!
Thanks for your comment!

I am also itching for payday to come this friday so I can come down to Purl and buy more wool! I need a hat!

Sounds like a wonderful idea! I started a blog on Beehive, but don't see the instructions mentioned for easily converting an existing blog over to the Bee Hive. Maybe I overlooked them?

Hi Andrea,
Here is the link for info on moving an existing blog:

I've set up mine and love Squarespace. It's so easy to use and easy to customize. Will all of the blogs be listed in the beehive community garden? I'd love to see what others are doing.
December 18, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterShan
Hi Shan,
All of the beehive blogs will be listed on the beehive community page. We're sort of waiting for those who have signed up to get their blogs ready to "go public" before we send traffic to them. You'll start seeing them there over the next week or two!
Thanks so much, can't wait to check out your new blog!

I've tried all day to create this, but with no luck at all. Very disappointed. But then I'm pretty clueless about this stuff. I can't even set my front page. And I've followed the tutorial. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
December 18, 2008 | Unregistered Commentercsquared
Hi csquared,
Squarespace has the best help system! If you login to your account and click "website management" in the top left corner you'll get a drop down menu. On the far right menu under "support" you will see "support tickets". Go there and open a ticket asking them to help you out. They usually answer support tickets very quickly and are VERY helpful and responsive.
Hope this helps!

Thanks so much. I'll try again tomorrow. And I do appreciate The Purl Bee for giving up this opportunity.

Hi, I signed in with a user name and password. I got out before creating anything and now I don't know how to get back in. Where do I click if I am already registered? Am I too hopeless for this?

Hi Karen,
You can find the login page if you press escape!
Good luck

Thanks for your quick reply to my question. I'm looking forward to being inspired by all the other blogs!

It took me a few hours to figure it all out, but in the end I'm pretty happy with how my page turned out. I was really interested to see how I could search for others in the beehive, but since that part hasn't been enabled yet, I guess I'll have to wait. Hopefully I'll be able to test it out before my 14 day trial is over. I've been really happy with my free wordpress blog though, so the community part of squarespace would have to be really good for me to consider the $8 a month minimum. However, inchmark is one of my new favorite blogs (a beautiful layout and inspiring content), so I'm keeping an open mind. :)

Can't believe it, but I'm actually getting there. You were so right Purl Bee. Squarespace does have great service, and I think that I'm going to sign up past the trial period. This is just the kick I've needed to make myself more accountable with my own work. Thanks so much.

I struggled at first with setting up the Squarespace blog, I think I'm slowly getting the hang of it. I love the overall look and I'm sure it will get easier with time. I'm curious how and when will I be connected with "The Bee". I don't see my page as being public yet. Is there a step I'm leaving out, or do I have to commit to Squarespace and pay before I see my blog listed? II am super excited to be public......

I have migrated my blog over, but switched from the Purl template. Will I still show up as a member of the Beehive?
January 26, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda Reed
Hi Amanda,
Can you post the link to your blog? I'll add it to the beehive (we're still adding things manuallly at this time).
Can't wait to see it, thank you for joining! --Joelle

Do you have any suggestions for people who already blog and don't want to change their blogging platform (is that the right word) but want to be part of the Purl Beehive?

My husband gave me my blog for Christmas last year and acts as my webmaster (something I would not give up for the world) but I would like to somehow link into the Beehive.

Thanks :)
February 9, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterpeanut
Hi Peanut,
The Beehive itself is limited to those using our platform with Squarespace, however, if you'd like to provide a link to your blog here we'd love to check it out. Thank you for your interest.

Thank you so much for doing this! The template designs are beautiful--everyone who has seen my new craft blog has loved it--and I am thoroughly enjoying all the other busy bees. Totally inspiring.

Joelle,
This is a wonderful idea, I have been following the blogs connected to the bee hive for a few months now. It is great to have a community of quality blogs connected because it is too easy to get lost in the blogosphere without one. I learned about Squarespace from this project and am about to end my 2 week free trail (I am signing up to continue). My site, though a work in progress is ready for consumption. I submitted to the Beehive, but was wondering if I didn't meet the criteria because I mostly paint and blog about apparel?
Please let me know how to properly join the Beehive!
Thank you,
Erin

Hi Erin,
I don't know if I overlooked your submission email to the beehive... what is your site? You can post it here, or you can send it again on the beehive submission form. I'll be sure to add it! --Joelle

Thanks Joelle! My new site is: http://www.blahutarnason.com & the blog portion is located at http://www.blahutarnason.com/niedzwiedz/
I'd like to add the bee hive link/widget everyone has, but I couldn't find it in the beehive template.
If you'd like to answer me off this forum I included my email in the field above. Regards,
Erin
