Colorful Crafting with Jen: His + Her Knit Hats

You may not think that it gets cold enough in Southern California to warrant a bulky cashmere hat, but at the first hint of the fall season most people make the wardrobe switch from flip flops to Ugg boots, tank tops to sweaters and salty beach hair to hooded sweatshirts and hats. At the end of every summer, I look forward to coming up with a new hat pattern. Last year's hat served me well, but this year I decided that my husband Ray needed one too, especially with all of the traveling to cold places that we will be doing over the next couple of months.
Our super soft Jade Sapphire 12 ply Cashmere, with its wide range of colors, was the perfect choice for our winter hats. After picking two colors that would work for both of us and choosing this simple spiral rib stitch, I started and finished my first hat in just one evening! If you'd like to make one or two, please visit my His + Her Knit Hats Project Journal! Enjoy! --Jen

Then I went and looked at the cost of that yarn! $40 per skein?!?!? That's a $120 hat!
I hope you get an employee discount! I'm searching for some other yarn to use....
Ideas? Alpaca sheds, wool is itchy, cotton?
Check out Blue Sky's Worsted, its super soft and does not shed. Its not as lofty as the cashmere but it knits at the same gauge and is quite a bit less expensive. For a boy, you might be able to get a whole hat from one skein:

To make the men's hat larger, add 6 stitches for every two inches you would like it to be bigger. You'll have to do more decrease rounds to get down to the final 7 stitches, but since the hat is bigger overall this is probably a good thing. The rest of the pattern should work fine.
our warehouse for purlsoho.com is located in tustin CA and i also live in orange county! you can come to our warehouse tuesday - friday from 9 - 3. call me if you'd like to visit! 800-597-PURL

I have knitted it twice and it always begins and ends with p3. That would mean there are 6 purls next to each other. Please review the directions.
rows 10 - 12 are correct. if you look back to the first section (rows 1 -3) you will notice that you knit 3 at the beginning and knit 3 at the end of the row. the gauge of the yarn along with the pattern stitch causes this little imperfection in the pattern. i thought it was strange also and doubted my pattern notes so i reknitted another hat just to check and it was correct!
i could've added another three stitches or taken away three stitches but, this would've caused the hat to be too big or too small. feel free to adapt the pattern if you would like but, you will have to change the decrease rounds!
