Colorful Crafting with Jen: His + Her Knit Hats

You may not think that it gets cold enough in Southern California to warrant a bulky cashmere hat, but at the first hint of the fall season most people make the wardrobe switch from flip flops to Ugg boots, tank tops to sweaters and salty beach hair to hooded sweatshirts and hats. At the end of every summer, I look forward to coming up with a new hat pattern. Last year's hat served me well, but this year I decided that my husband Ray needed one too, especially with all of the traveling to cold places that we will be doing over the next couple of months.

Our super soft Jade Sapphire 12 ply Cashmere, with its wide range of colors, was the perfect choice for our winter hats. After picking two colors that would work for both of us and choosing this simple spiral rib stitch, I started and finished my first hat in just one evening!  If you'd like to make one or two, please visit my His + Her Knit Hats Project Journal!  Enjoy! --Jen

Love those hats! I think I might even get my hubby to wear one of those, especially in blue. And what a fabulous picture of the two of you - just love it!

Thank you for great patterns and it will be great gift to my dad, but his head is large and the circumference is 25”, bigger than the given pattern. I think I need to adjust it a bit and wonder how long should I have for the finished circumference?

I love the hats. I have been looking for a new hat pattern. I have made tons and tons of the earflap hats from last minute knitted gifts, but the kids and friends can each only have so many of those hats.

just a hint... you can avoid the peeking through colors when doing stripes by just knitting all the stitches in the row you do the color change on. I think it is a much nicer look....

Wow. The hat is cute! I'm a guy knitter, and immediately thought of making the smaller one for my son.

Then I went and looked at the cost of that yarn! $40 per skein?!?!? That's a $120 hat!

I hope you get an employee discount! I'm searching for some other yarn to use....

Ideas? Alpaca sheds, wool is itchy, cotton?

Hi Terry,
Check out Blue Sky's Worsted, its super soft and does not shed. Its not as lofty as the cashmere but it knits at the same gauge and is quite a bit less expensive. For a boy, you might be able to get a whole hat from one skein:

Can i get a suggestion for size adjustment for a bigger hat? I see same question from naoko.
December 18, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterStephenie
Hi Stephenie and Naoko,
To make the men's hat larger, add 6 stitches for every two inches you would like it to be bigger. You'll have to do more decrease rounds to get down to the final 7 stitches, but since the hat is bigger overall this is probably a good thing. The rest of the pattern should work fine.

What a great design! Love it. I have been eyeing that spiral rib in my 365 Stitch calendar, and you have given me the nudge to give it a shot. I'm making some fingerless gloves with the spiral pattern. Thanks for the inspiration! They are coming out so pretty!

Thanks for the hat pattern, it's really cute. I think there is an error on row 10-12.
I have knitted it twice and it always begins and ends with p3. That would mean there are 6 purls next to each other. Please review the directions.

hi sara,

rows 10 - 12 are correct. if you look back to the first section (rows 1 -3) you will notice that you knit 3 at the beginning and knit 3 at the end of the row. the gauge of the yarn along with the pattern stitch causes this little imperfection in the pattern. i thought it was strange also and doubted my pattern notes so i reknitted another hat just to check and it was correct!

i could've added another three stitches or taken away three stitches but, this would've caused the hat to be too big or too small. feel free to adapt the pattern if you would like but, you will have to change the decrease rounds!

After I finished this hat for my husband, I was a little worried about the spiral ribbing looking too choppy. I shouldn't have worried! After blocking and shrinking the hat to fit, the ribbing turned out beautifully subtle and lovely. Thank you for such a wonderful pattern. I am so pleased that I was able to finish before his birthday. He loves it and wants a few more too!
