Very Special Scarves

There are few more thoughtful ways to show your friends and family your love than by giving them a hand made gift.  These hand knit scarves are sure to be favorites of almost any gift recipient on your list! Each scarf is made with 100% cashmere yarn, both beautifully soft and exquisitely hand dyed.

This Lovely Leaf Lace scarf is made with Lobster Pot's 8-ply cashmere in color "Chatham Light".  The stitches that create this beautiful and dimensional pattern are a simple combination of strategic yarn-overs and decreases. The lace pattern has a wonderful dimensionality while the stockinette pattern curls around your neck like a big soft hug.

This Easy Mistake Stitch scarf is made with Jade Sapphire's gorgeous 12-ply cashmere in color "Green Tea".  If you know how to knit and purl you can make this scarf! Mistake Stitch creates a deep and lofty rib that looks like so much more work than it actually is.

If you'd like to make one of these scarves for a very special loved one, you can find the complete patterns at these links:

Happy Holidays! --Joelle

joellle ... the pictures and patterns are mixed up in the write-up .. double check ... and maybe there's a more reasonable yarn suggestion too ... don't you think? 6 skeins @ $46 a pop ... ai ai ai ... happy days ...

Hi Ina,
the photos don't look mixed up to me, can you clarify?
Also, I did link to lots of other yarn options in the materials section of each pattern.
thanks,
Joelle

Oh thank you! Those are two of the prettiest scarves I have ever seen! They are classy and I love the colors.

They are both lovely! I'm a bit partial to the leaf lace myself :D hmmm... perhaps post holiday knitting....

Hi Joelle,
Gorgeous colors. I'm actually making a mistake stitch scarf now that's super luscious at 12 inches wide! And I've added a 2 stitch border to make a neat selvedge stitch edge (slip first stitch purlwise, knit rest of border stitches, repeat).
Thanks for pointing out the leaf pattern!

Jaeger Cashair from the stash will be perfect for the Easy Mistake Stitch Scarf. I've made something similar before, but I'd forgotten how great that stitch looks - with so little effort!

All I have to do now is to decide whether to make it for an Xmas present or keep it for myself...

I love these scarves! Love the colors and the paterns.
Off topic, I just want to thank you for your inspiration, a previous post , a knitted hat with circular needles, I had never used them I went out and bought 2 sets and have begun my maiden voyage of knitting a hat!
Thank you so much.!

I didn't notice the stockinette section in the middle of the lace leaf scarf at first, but once I did, it made the scarf much more interesting... and looks cozy!

I absolutely love the scarves, but with all due respect, who can afford to knit these scarves at $200+++ apiece????
December 3, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMichelle
Hi Michelle,
Thanks so much for your comment. In each of the patterns under "materials" I have provided a link to lots of other more affordable yarns that also work for these patterns. Hope this helps!

what a lovely pattern!

Thanks for pointing us to other options. I was very sad to see that the beautiful orange scarf would cost $300. Many of us knit to make beautiful things but also because we don't have a lot of money -- I guess I'm thinking that knitting in an unusual pattern more than compensates for what I have to spend. I don't know if this is the right place for this post but I have to say, gently, that to suggest using 6 skeins of such expensive yarn for a scarf in these horrible times seems a little....well.....

I don't get what the mistake is, the scarf is beautiful!
December 3, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterknitterkp
I am a bit confused about the comments regarding the cost of the materials - can't you use any worsted weight yarn for either scarves? These very special scarves are perfect for holiday gifts, no matter what yarn is used.

Happy Holidays!

Gorgeous! Both scarves are beautiful. I have a hard time finding scarf patterns that I like (they are usually too boring or too complicated) - these look just perfect! :-)

There is nothing wrong with a little cashmere for a special gift. :-)

OH! I LOVE both scarves!!! I need to come in and get some of that yarn.... even more excited for my schools winter break now! :)

i appreciate your offering such a nice and lovely pattern... the controversy cashemere version scarf will be worth if this is a VERY special gift for someone for a long time... i am sure it will look beautiful with any worsted yarn. pattern itself is very nice and clever. thanks!

Wow. Your scarves are lovely. The colors are wonderful. I just love the design.

What a good time to be thinking about something beautiful and wonderful as cashmere! We need beautiful thoughts now more than ever. As with any pattern, we are never locked in to the yarn that is given. You can always substitute appropriately.

Thank you for the pattern, Joelle. I haven't knitted since I was little, with my grandmothers watching over my shoulder. The easier scarf is motivation to get back to the needles again. Thanks! -Kim

Joelle, I just love seeing what you do with my cashmere! How fabulous. Sue M.

Wow, these are the most beautiful scarves I have ever seen! I adore them both! I wish I knew how to do more than the simple stitch you learn in the very beginning! I would love to do these for family.
December 10, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterTricia
the leaf lace scarf is adorable. for all of you guys that would like to learn how to do something other than a plain garter stitch scarf, these are great places to start!
December 11, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterRachael
Am I missing something? I think the pattern may be wrong. I am off by 5 stitches and am only on the first row.
December 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterDee
Hi Dee,
I assume you're talking about the leaf lace scarf? I can promise you that the pattern isn't wrong, I test knit two times just to be sure!

Did you see in the pattern that on row 2 you end with the last repeat at k3 instead of k5? There is a similar situation on rows 4 and 8 also. If this doesn't solve your problem let us know what you're dealing with in as much detail as you can and we'll be happy to help. (For instance if you have more OR less stitches than you should etc). --Joelle

sorry, make that the 2nd row. i knit 3, 5 repeats as per pattern but i have 5 extra stitches and then ends with k3
December 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterDee
hi Joelle - got it! i did not read the pattern correctly. thnx so much.
December 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterDee
Hi Dee,
I'm not sure where you're getting the 5 repeats?
Here is the line from the pattern that seems to be giving you a problem (but please correct me if I'm wrong):
Row 2: K3, *k2tog, yo, k1, yo, ssk, k5 repeat from *, end last repeat k3.
So for this row, first you knit 3 stitches, then you knit 2 stitches together, wrap yarn around needle, knit 1 stitch, wrap yarn around needle, slip, slip knit (left slanting decrease), then knit 5 stitches, then repeat from knit 2.
Is this what you are doing? I'm wondering if you're reading "k5 repeat from *" as if you only repeat the previous 5 stitches?

Dee,
Yay! I'm so glad you worked it out.
