A Week of Christmas Projects from The Purl Bee!

We've been busy at the Purl Bee, casting on and threading, felting and stuffing, clipping and assembling. Our vision started with a color inspiration, the whites and creams of traditional Christmas accented by blasts of hot pink. A fresh take on an old story!

But we also wanted to honor that old story, to reminisce with the simplicity and beauty of a hand crafted Christmas. Employing well-loved signs and symbols of the season, we kept our designs uncomplicated in order to allow our carefully chosen materials to tell the tale.

We'll be posting a new project every day this week, starting today with Molly's beautiful Simple Sewn Bird Ornaments. Check in with us every day for a daily dose of Christmas inspiration. We hope these projects inspire in you the same happy holiday spirit that we felt while we were making them. Spread it around - it's infectious!

Merry Christmas from all of us at The Purl Bee!

ps:  We got our 4-foot Ivory colored Feather Tree from The Feather Tree Co.

Molly's Sketchbook:  Simple Sewn Bird Ornaments

There is something so appealing about bird Christmas tree ornaments and I don't think it's just because birds live in trees. I think it's also because of the bird's association with peace and song, two things so closely associated with Christmas.

So to start off our Week of Christmas Projects I made these bright little birds. It was a great way to begin the holiday season. I loved sitting at the kitchen table making a bunch of them, seeing how they all had different characteristics as they came to life. It really got me into the Christmas spirit imagining them all hanging on the tree.

I used a bunch of special fabrics, mixing the delicate Meadow line with bolder favorites like Kona Cotton and Cake Rock Beach to create a vibrant patchwork flock. They are easy and quick to sew. You could make one to bring as a gift to your next holiday party or make a bunch to hang on your own tree! Either way these little guys will spread holiday cheer wherever they fly! If you'd like to make them please visit my Simple Sewn Bird Ornaments Project Journal! --Molly

Está bello el árbol. Estoy de acuerdo en rescatar la simplicidad de los adornos hechos a mano para el arbolito de navidad. Mi favorito fue el pajarito. Besos.
(My favorite was the birdy) Kisses

I love that pink! It's nice to get away from the traditional red and green.

Thank you for giving out the pattern! I've been thinking about making ornaments for my fellow book club members and these are perfect. I think I'll embroider them with "Bookies Christmas 2009"
