Molly's Sketchbook: A Rotary Cutting Tutorial

RTY22

Customers at Purl Patchwork are alternately fascinated and terrified by rotary cutters. On one hand they make cutting fabric so accurate and easy, but on the other hand they're scarily sharp and the process of rotary cutting can seem mystifying and overly mathematical. However, with some practical guidance, you will be able to use a rotary cutter properly, and believe me, once you get the hang of it, you'll never look back!  If you'd like to join the rotary cutting ranks follow along with my Rotary Cutting Tutorial. --Molly

I think this is perfect! As a new quilter, I'm excited to read about why rotary cutting kicks butt.

Thanks for the tutorial. Just in time as I just bought a rotary cutter, ruler and mat this weekend. I am a leftie and didn't even think about adjusting the blade--I get so used to doing things with my right hand.

Where was this when I got mine a few years back. I lost feeling in my finger because my hand got in the way of using the rotary cutter and I bled for three days. It's a nice scar, just no feeling in it.

Thank you for this very in-depth tutorial! I bought an Amy Butler quilt kit a few weeks ago and the material has been sitting around just looking beautiful. Once I read this, I went out last night and bought all the above tools. I practiced just on some material I had lying around for some pillows and it was fabulous...I know I saved a lot of time by doing this. It's a no-brainer!

Thank you so much for this! I have been using a rotary cutter for a little over a year now but had never heard that I should be using a no-slip ruler. Now I can see how that will make my life much easier/safer.

I love this tutorial, I have just broken my cutter and am waiting for a new one from Amazon. I am going through some of your quilt tutorials. Great site.
