Whit's Knits: Sullivan Street Bolero

wearingit1.jpg
Sullivan Street, where Purl is located, does not mess around when it comes to fashion. So it is with some trepidation that I name this little sweater the Sullivan Street Bolero.

I do feel bolstered by the true beauty of this yarn, The Fibre Company's Road to China, a hand-dyed blend of alpaca, silk, camel, and cashmere. The weight, the drape, the super soft texture make this yarn practically unsurpassed in feeling. And no one beats the Fibre Company's subtle, deep, and glowing colors.

I'm so not a Soho fashionista, but I think I can walk down Sullivan Street with my head held high in this number! For directions on how to make your own, visit my Sullivan Street Bolero Project Journal. -Whitney

You're right Sullivan Street is damn swanky, but I think that little bolero fits in just fine ;)

That is so beautiful and the color is gorgeous. Is that the Garnet or the Ruby?

Beautiful!! If only I could knit instead of crochet, I'd be all about making that!

Hi Felicity-
Thank you for the comment. It's the Garnet color but the Ruby would be beautiful too! - The Purl Bee

What a great little knit! I hope to visit your Sullivan Street shop in June. Now I'll know how to look less like a tourist. Thanks!

Whit,
Any thoughts about how to make this darling bolero just a wee bit smaller. Say for a 32-34 inch chest. I'm willing to experiment, but thought you might have some suggestions.

Hi Laura,

I think the easiest thing to do in this case is to knit at a bit tighter a gauge, like 5 stitches to the inch in stockinette. You can do this by going down a needle size or two or by using a slightly thinner yarn. Either way, I think the ribbing and fit are forgiving enough for experimentation!

Thanks!
Whitney

Wow, this is absolutely gorgeous! I really love the color and it's not too bulky so you can wear it to "cover up" tank tops and wear to work. That's my biggest problem - I have too many tank tops and can't wear them anywhere because they are too revealing. Thanks for solving my problem.
