Whit's Knits: Evening Shrug

ESalone.jpg

As this season's wedding invitations start to trickle in, I'm already wondering what I'm going to wear. This year, I am determined to tackle the perennial outdoor party problem of how to keep warm without wrecking a perfectly good outfit!

Jackets are too bulky; cardigans are too casual; shawls are too fussy, especially on the dance floor. And, so, although I have never worn, let alone made, a shrug before, I thought I'd give it a shot. Now I get it! The shrug works! A fashion conundrum solved...

I am wondering whether this beautiful shrug might be knit up in one piece. By knitting the entire back in stockinette, then joining the stitches back together for knitting in the round and reversing the directions and knitting the second sleeve? It is a very pretty project and the bamboo yarn looks terrific. Thanks so much for sharing it with us!!!

That is a really beautiful shrug. I have to admit, I haven't thought of them as a fashion item but seeing it on it looks stunning. Thanks for being so generous and sharing the details

It's gorgeous. With many dresses in my closet, it is a perfect match.

thanks for the lovely pattern! i especially like the detail on the sleeve cuffs. ditto on the whole shawl/cardigan fancy-pants problem of what to wear to a decent shindig.

Beautiful shrug, beautiful model.
And the yarn is drawing me in.
I am way too busy to be drawn in.
I have been avoiding Fanny's Fingering in Wildflower
and the blue/red one next to it for ages.

Melanie-- your idea might work as long as you don't mind that the second sleeve will be 1/2 stitch off.

So beautiful - it looks extremely elegant on. I might have to whip this one up for my summer weddings! Either that or just the unpredictable San Francisco summer weather.

You got skillz, girl! Can I ask what yarn that is, it's truly gorgeous. Bamboo? Silk? Milk?

My daughter is getting married in Maine this summer. Mother-like I had wanted something to give her in case (this is Maine, of course it will get cool!) she got cold later in the evening. I had thought about making her a shawl but when I saw this I saw a wonderful alternative that wouldn't require futzing with while dancing, etc. I made it in a wool/silk blend for warmth.
She loves it and I am happy to have my knitting be part of this special time.
Best of all she plans to wear it post wedding with dresses and jeans.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful shrug and pattern!

I made this for my daughter's wedding last April. I had visions of her and her maid of honor sister throwing a ski parker on over their beutiful dresses. The day was perfect and they didn't really need the shrug until later in the evening. they looked beautiful and were the envy of many of the young ladies there. In fact I now need to make one for my God daughter.
