Whit's Knits: Wedding Washcloths

WWfinal.jpg

When we got married, my husband and I didn't register for gifts. We were young and naive and just felt kind of weird asking people to give us stuff. So instead of gravy boats and champagne glasses, we got lots of funky and surprising things, like these salt and pepper shakers. They came from my wonderful Aunt Rosemary who collects vintage treasures wherever she goes. We never could have registered for these!

I have to admit that sometimes I do regret the decision to not register, like in the morning when I eat my cereal out of my Ikea bowl with my Ikea spoon at my rickety kitchen table. But, really, I would trade a thousand silver spoons for the thoughtful, personal and often handmade gifts we did receive.

So, in that spirit, I decided to make my cousin Maria and her soon-to-be-husband, Len, a set of cotton washcloths for their June wedding. Blue Sky's new Skinny Cotton is organically grown and, in the case of the tan and cream, undyed. It is soft and sturdy, and will just get better and better as Maria and Len grow old together!

I'm also giving them some heart shaped soaps that I got at a store near Purl called Sabon (You can get them online too - click here.) Weddings are the perfect time for such luxuries!

If you want to eschew the wedding registry too, visit my Wedding Washcloths Project Journal. Thanks! - Whitney

The wash cloths are a wonderful gift. I loved the narrative, and appreciated the information on blocking. Thank you.

Manos stria works up beautifully, also, as suggested by Purl a few years ago. Here's a pattern option from my aunt in Michigan that I have used with Manos Stria.

Cast on 36 stitches, cotton yarn, #10 needles
Knit 4 rows for border
Row 1 - K8, P5, K5, P5, K5, P5, P3
Row 2 - K7, P5, K5, P5, K5, P5, K4
Row 3 - K3, P2, K5, P5, K5, P5, K5, P3, K3
Row 4 - K5, P5, K5, P5, K5, P5, K6
Row 5 - K3, P4, K5, P5, K5, P5, K5, P1, K3
Row 6 - K3, P5, K5, P5, K5, P5, K8
Repeat above 6 rows 6 more times.
Then Knit 4 rows and bind off.

My husband and I didn't register for the very same reason! And also,we tend to like quirky things that they don't sell at Macy's!
I LOVE the washcloths, they are beautiful, your cousin is very lucky!

I made the same gift for my sister when she had a baby a few years ago. I made a combination of miniature and larger soft washcloths in a variety of blues. I even knitted a baby footprint into the center of one of them. Quick, easy, and definitely appreciated!

Great idea and colourways. What a lovely story -- you are the next Aunt Rosemary.

I was on a washcloth/discloth kick a couple years ago and knit up a ton. I have given them for shower, housewarmings and hostess gifts. Never considered weddings but I will now!!!

These remind me of some my mother and I saw although they were knitted up in a linen/hemp. My mother knitted several up and absolutely loves them for washing her face. They launder easily too.

Love the wedding washcloths. Your skinny cotton is running low on light colors. Will more be added soon?

Now, how did you know? I have two weddings coming up that I was stumped about gifts for...

the organic cotton just raises the bar from "nice" to "ooooo....".
