Molly's Sketchbook: Lovely Lined Curtains

linedcurtainfullsize-web.jpg

Honestly I'm the type of seamstress who usually leaves the selvages on her curtains. However I'm also the type of seamstress that likes to figure out how things are put together. Along that line I got to wondering how one would make a "real" drape, one  that hung straight and had a lining and a deep hem; one that you could wash without fear of the selvages shrinking oddly. So I set about figuring it out and these lovely curtains are the result. They have a beautiful weight and drape and the yellow and white Global Weave Embroidered Fabric will make any room look fresh and sunny.

The one major skill I learned from this project was pulling a thread to get a straight cutting line. I had always wondered how to cut a real straight line on such a large piece of fabric and it's great now to have figured it out and actually done it. After both of my 40-inch x 68.5-inch curtains were done I had a nice feeling of accomplishment, like I'd graduated to a new quality level in sewing. They looked and felt like "real" drapes!  If you want to make some for yourself (I also think they'd  make a great house warming gift!) you can follow along with my Lovely Lined Curtains Project Journal. Enjoy! --Molly

I bought this fabric months ago for this exact purpose, and haven't gotten around to it yet! Thank you SO much for reading my mind again :)

That whole room looks so inviting and peaceful. The curtains are really just the crowning glory of the whole thing. Beautiful work as always!

I love the whole room - not just the curtains. And I'm definitely going to remember the tip about pulling a thread to get a straight line - I've got far too many wonky curtains in my house.

bless you....I've been wanting to make tab curtains for forever and these instructions are great.

One thing I can't quite figure out - if the un-hemmed length is 72" the hem is 3" twice and the seam allowance at the top is 1/2" how does the final curtain turn out to be 60"
I feel like I'm missing something.

Any help would be appreciated since I need to convert the pattern to a different length.

Hi Jane-
Thanks so much for pointing out this mistake! The finished curtain is actually 40" X 68.5". The pattern and descriptions have been fixed and I added a little update on how to make the curtains in any length in the "pulling and cutting section" of the project journal here:

Thanks again, I really appreciate your careful reading and nice comment!- Molly

Beautiful curtains and such pretty fabric. I would love to use this fabric but I need something with pale blue and white. I cant see this colourway on your website so just wondering whether you will get any more colours in soon?
Thanks, P

I have used this technique a few times since seeing this explanation, but each time (with pillows) I end up with two pieces exactly the right size, but don't line up currectly. They are mirror images, but one side is wider than the other and visa versa on the other side. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

Hi Alyssa,
We're happy to help out, but it would be great if you could give us a little more information. I'm not sure what you mean by mirror images and why one would be wider than the other. Molly's pattern is made specifically for theese curtains and she has included the seam allowances for that so maybe that is why your sizes are ending up differently? Please let us know and we'll do our best to help you out.
