Molly's Sketchbook: A Party Garland!

A good friend of mine is getting married in August and I'm a bridesmaid.  The bride-to-be suggested that we make some garlands out of fabric. We wanted to make something charming and very long (40 feet!), but we also wanted them to be easy and quick. I have always loved the "chains" that result from chain piecing and thought this method would make a great garland.  I didn't think that regular cotton thread would be strong enough to support the weight of 40 feet of garland so I used invisible thread which is made out of super strong nylon and has always reminded me of fishing line. It's really hard to break, and as the name suggests, it's invisible.

This garland is fun to make and totally unfussy. You leave the fabric edges raw so there is no hemming or pinning, just cutting and sewing. The finished product transforms any space into one that is both festive and inviting. Depending on which colors you use it could look great not only at a wedding, but also at a holiday celebration, a baby shower or a child's birthday party (I even hung one above my kitchen sink just because I thought it was so pretty)!  Plus it's reusable so you can enjoy it for years to come.

Again, I love it! I thought it was made using paper, but of course it's fabric :) And I haven't used invisible thread before. Thanks for giving me a reason to try it!

These reminds me of the colorful paper Mexican banners that cover the ceiling at my favorite restaurant . I'm impressed. This is such a creative use of fabric.

What a gorgeous photo. It looks straight out of a magazine, as yours often do. Thank you for sharing such great ideas!

These are gorgeous! I have just been given some old blankets - white and green. Going to dye one red and then do Christmas bunting- holly leaves, stars, hearts. Loving the invisible thread - never thought of that.

I am working on a post about DIY pennants. Your display is cute and original with the different shapes and sizes. Moreover, your instructions are easy to understand. I will definitely submit your craft project to my readers.
