The Big Mitten Give!

Robin Melanson's fabulous book, "Knitting New Mittens & Gloves", is full of innovative patterns and fresh takes on old ideas. Right now you can download a free mitten pattern from the book with one small catch: to please find the time to knit a pair for a person in need. It's a deal!

The free pattern is for the Alternating Currents mittens and includes the full mitten and fingerless versions. They're quick, warm and easy, great for you, great for gifts, and great for charity!

The book's editor, Melanie Falick, knit a pair which can be seen on her blog, melaniefalickbooks.com.

I got intrigued by another pattern in the book (not for free, unfortunately!), called the Poppy Gloves. I decided to knit up a pair in Blue Sky's Sportweight Alpaca and Alchemy's Haiku silk and mohair blend.

I used two skeins of the alpaca in Natural Streaky Brown and one of the mohair in Platinum. Plus I needed a set of US #4 double pointed needles.

The result is these really cozy gloves that, instead of looking like big bear paws (like so many "cozy" gloves do!), are quite elegant and super wearable.

It's about two hundred degrees in New York City, so I don't really need an excuse to long for fall, but it looks like I found one!  - Whitney

Thanks for the heads up on this book. I've been wanting to expand my glove/mitten wardrobe.
And I have to say, the Poppy Gloves that you knit are simply amazing! I love the wrist part with the Platinum Mohair.
