Molly's Sketchbook: Sampler Pillows and a New Embroidery Tutorial

twocolorbeauty.jpg

One of my all time favorite craft books is The Constance Howard Book of Stitches. I find it a never ending inspiration. All of the pictures in the book are in black and white but they show the most creative embroidery stitches and opened me up to the idea of two (or more) color embroidery, which is something I'd never really thought of before.

After experimenting with two color embroidery and finding my favorite stitches I wanted a project to show them off. I love my vintage embroidered pillow cases (you can see them in this picture of my Around the Wool Blanket ) so I decided to make a modern version of them on some earthy linen pillow cases. Instead of embroidering something traditional like flowers I just sewed many lines using different stitches. I  like to think of them as embroidery samplers in action!

Oh, I love those embroidery lines, especially the yellow on the blue-gray linen pillowcase. I'll have to get out my needle and thread and give it a try...although I can tell, yours are quite a lot better than mine ever will be!

I've been wanting to embroider our pillow cases for a while. These are a great inspiration!

I really like your pillowcases. Question - when you launder them, does the embroidery thread shrink any? are your pillowcases washed by hand and then air dried?

I love your pillowcases. Lately, I've really been drawn to needle arts, though I am not sure why. I did embroider a lavender sachet pillow (on my blog) awhile back and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was calming, creative, and something that I could see as being short term (get it done now) or long term (a creative piece to pick up at the end of the day.)

I look into the book you mentioned. I wonder if you have any suggestions for someone just starting to embroider. Tips on thread, technique, hoops, fabric, etc.?

Swoon. Those are really lovely--what a wonderful combination of color and pattern! I take it these are decorative pillows, or are linen pillowcases nice to lay your head on?

This post is great and the tutorial is brilliant. You are one crafty girl. I love finding embroidered pillow cases at the flea market and now I'm inspired to make some of my own. Thanks Molly.
