Whit's Knits: Granny Square Slippers

My cousin Katie recently spent some time in the Republic of Georgia and brought me back these amazing blue and pink crocheted slippers. She reported that similar slippers were for sale at all the marketplaces, always in bright and unexpected color combinations.

Upon closer inspection, I saw that each slipper was made up of six equally sized granny squares. How beautifully simple! I love when intelligent design meets handcraft, when innovative engineering meets a house slipper.

For my take on the traditional design I wanted the slippers to look even more homespun and funky, so I used Manos del Uruguay's Handspun Semi Solid yarn. I think the unevenness of the spin and the variations in the kettle dyed colors add a little cozy character to the slippers.

With winter approaching, I've been thinking that it would be kind of cute and funny for my husband and me to traipse around in matching slippers. The sizing is so easy to adjust that I was able to fulfill my fantasy and made a pair for each of us!

They fit surprising well, hugging our feet in a warm woolen embrace. So now I have a vision of a basket at our door filled with lots of these slippers. Guests can come in, grab a pair, and be grateful to avoid the embarrassment of holey socks!

To learn the easy steps for making these slippers, please visit my Granny Square Slippers Project Journal. Thanks! - Whitney

Those look cozy. With only the first picture I thought it was a butterfly!

This iproject looks pretty, sweet, fun and swift, a boon for the holidays. Yet again I bless (or curse) the Purl Bee for making me excited about making something else new before I have finished the old project.

I mean really, I am just getting to the Christmas trees! Give a girl a break (not really).

Keep it coming Purl Bee.

When I was a girl and took sewing classes in grade 7, we made similar slippers from washcloths! LOL, the crocheted ones are much nicer. Wish there was an easy way to make them non-slip though.

I'm so excited that I can make something useful and beautiful out of granny squares (I'm not a fan of them as blankets), everyone is getting these for Christmas now - thank you!

How cool! I'm part ethnic Georgian and growing up, all the aunts would give me these for Christmas. Of course, I *hated* them then. But now I'm thinking I need to make a pair or three :)

I'm smitten. I'm living in a big old house with 7 friends and we're not turning on the heat for a while to save on bills. I think eight pairs of slippers are in order... :)

I have just been given a pair of these in an angle swap!! I really like them and was busy trying to work out how they were made!

This is my first visit to your blog, it will not be my last :-)

These are so clever! I made up a pair last night, in just a couple of hours. I found them to be a little bit too loose for my taste, and so gently felted them--they came out so perfectly nice, soft and a bit fuzzy and perfectly fitted to my foot!

I love these. We just moved into in an old Victorian in SF, and it's cold. Plus we have neighbors below us. I love the idea of a basket at the door full of these for guests to keep their toootsies toasty when we ask them to remove their shoes.

Keep it coming

these are awesome, but i have one question: can anyone think of some sort of non-slip sole or something that can function as one? my only experience with yarn-crafted slippers has left me on my butt in any hardwood or tile situation. thanks!

Ooh, a beautiful and functional use for the 12 granny squares I made a few years ago for a pair of baby overalls that required 40 squares - a number I never quite got to! Thanks!
