Bag of Beans!

All of the women in my family are crazy about jelly beans. In fact, our husbands have been known to say "step away from the jelly beans, honey" on more than one Easter day. We're incapable of having just a few! My daughter has inherited the jelly bean gene.

This Easter I decided it was time to cut back on the sugar and up the fun factor. Felt jelly bean bags in a rainbow of colors were the answer! My daughter is my in-house focus group and these were an instant hit with her. "More, mommy, more" she would say as she created piles like a squirrel collecting nuts for winter. Lucky for her, just like the real thing, I couldn't get enough either. Every time I thought I had sewn my last one, I would decide to do just one more using the vast spectrum of colors we have in our wool felt.

When the pile started to get a bit out of control, I realized it was time to make a cheerful drawstring bag to hold them. I used upholstery weight Seven Island Tulip damask in a sunny yellow. I couldn't resist using the alphabet brocaded ribbons in my daughter's initials for the drawstring. Voila, it's a keepsake! If you'd like to put a smile on a jelly bean lover's face this Easter, visit my Bag of Beans Project Journal.  If you'd like to make the drawstring bag, whether it's for holding your knitting projects, wrapping a gift or a cute travel pouch visit my Easy Drawstring Bag Project Journal.

Happy Easter! --Page

I <3 Jelly Beans so much! I can never stop eating them. I will march through a whole bag if I'm not careful. These are adorable.

How fun!! My kids would absolutely LOVE these. I was thinking while reading it that I could hide them throughout the house as I make them, and that way they could find them all Easter season long!

I'm so happy to have found your blog! I'm still a beginner sewer, although I've had experience for the past 20 years of my life (I'm 35!). I'm attempting to make some aprons for my daughter's birthday party in June, but I'm having a time of it with my curved seams/hems. I saw your entry from Feb on curved seams and it's just great. I love your idea of the felt jelly bean pillows for Easter too. You are so creative! I look forward to checking your blog regularly from now on. Thanks!

It would be so fun to come up with games using these! You could throw them, hide them, balance them... I wish the Easter Bunny would drop some off at my house! They're so... "sweet!"

The jelly beans are adorable! I love the colors. I also like the bag. It looks like to perfect thing to carry you pj's and toothbrush in for sleepovers. Too bad I can't sew!

Those are great!!! What a fun idea for a low-sugar Easter. I need those rear-round as I'm a sucker for Jelly Belly Sours. My biggest Easter craving are Cadbury Cream Eggs...maybe I should get making some felt chocolate eggs to satisfy my Easter sweet tooth!

This is such a fantastic project!!! Both the bag and the beans have me swooning. I do have a question, especially given the previous post on scissors: do you cut wool felt with fabric shears or with "all-purpose" scissors? I feel like felt -- perhaps more craft felt than wool felt -- might dull fabric shears, but I'm not sure. I'd love some guidance on that, as I turn to felt more and more these days for fun projects. Thanks so much for your wonderful site and all the inspiration it contains!

Fantastic.

Hi Cameron,
We would recommend cutting wool felt with fabric scissors, but we're not 100% about "craft felt", if it seems really stiff or not very fabric-like perhaps its best to stick with "all purpose" scissors for that.
Good luck!

I chaparoned a group of high school students on a church outreach trip to Mexicali, Mexico for the week before Easter. I brought 10 kits I prepared witha bag and 6 jelly bean bags. I sewed with the teenaged girls and they loved this project. In total we made 80 jelly bean bags and then the little boys and girls played with them all week. It was superb! Thank You!

I made about 28 of these fabulous beans for my 4 year old grandson. The best part of the project was that he wanted to sew them closed after filling with beans himself. Surprise, surprise he was incredible and only needed help threading the needle and tying the knots.
