Molly's Sketchbook: Sunny Tied Quilt

I am so ready for this winter to end! Enough already! Each morning I wake up full of hope that it will be warm, but when I check the weather I'm usually confronted with "highs in the upper 40s". The excitement of hunkering down for the winter has long since faded, but spring hasn't really yet sprung (at least not in New York). So as an invocation to Spring, I made this cheerful, sunny and quick tied quilt.

I used lots of richly colored Kona Cotton and P & B Color Spectrum solids in colors that remind me of warm sunshine and new leafy growth. Then I made sure that everything about this project was a breeze, from the super easy pin-less piecing, to the zig zag stitched binding. I wanted this double sized quilt to represent a break from the hard slog of winter and a movement towards the relaxed and sunny days to come.

One of the reasons this quilt is so quick to make is that it's not actually quilted, it's tied. I used Cascade 220, a 100% wool yarn to do the ties. This is not a superwash wool so when I wash the quilt the ties will felt, which means they won't come untied.  Additionally this quilt doesn't have an attached binding, the back is actually folded over to the front and stitched down, which cuts down on finishing time. This quilt can easily be made in one weekend.

If you'd like to make one of your own please visit my Sunny Tied Quilt Project Journal. --Molly

That really is a beautiful quilt. The colors work real well together. It's like a Summer vacation on a bed.

I love this quilt! I've had my eye on that botanical print fabric and it's great to see it "in action." Also, I am really grateful for the tip about using wool to tie the quilt...I've never made a quilt and I want to and I think I will try this.

It's like a little nugget of spring. I love it, and it certainly makes me crave sunshine, fresh flowers, and bare feet.

What a great quilt! I love putting together quilt tops, but I usually run out of steam when it comes time to do the quilting. You've inspired me to get out some tops I've put together and tie some up! Thanks!

I love this quilt! I want one for my room! But I am so busy sewing for Civil War Re-enactments that I don't have any spare time! I will need to remember this for later :)

We have an all white bedroom, this quilt would be stunning in there with the daffodils starting to bloom just outside the window.
Thanks for the burst of sunshine and inspiration!

My favorite kind of quilt - simple, colorful, graphic!

Is that your bedroom? So lovely and peaceful. You could move the bed and put a swing on that beam. Or you could leave the bed there and still have a swing.
Beaut quilt too...

I can sooo relate to your feeling about wanting winter to end. It is now April, and we were still getting snow here last week... Enough now, as both you and I say.

And like you, I've simply begun Spring.

Your quilt is really a bright bold step, and I like that you have chosen patterns and colors that will take you right into summer. The doodlybits with the yarn are my favorite.

Let's keep wishing for that weather to change!
What beautiful fresh scheme. It all works so well together in the amounts you've chosen. Fab!
