Whit's Knits: Crocheted Passover Yarmulke

With Passover approaching, these beautifully simple crocheted yarmulkes are easy enough to whip up amidst all your other Seder preparations. Holidays are made special by the unique ways each family finds to interpret the traditions of the day, from handed down rituals to secret recipes. If year after year your guests were offered these hand crafted yarmulkes, the day would only be enriched.

These yarmulkes are made out of Nature's Palette Fingering yarn, a merino wool that is organically grown and lovingly dyed with natural plant materials. Unencumbered by the simplicity of the design, the yarn is free to show off its beautifully subtle color changes. For the pattern, please visit my Crocheted Passover Yarmulke. Thanks! - Whitney

When my parents married, my mother and I knit all yarmulkes for the guests and she made my dad a special one to match his outfit. I remember it being a lot of fun!

Thank you for the wonderful posting! I enjoy reading other peoples musings and it brings up my personal memories, of the beautiful crocheted yarmulke Laurie Kimmelstiel (a wonderful crafter) gave my son when he was born, and the handkerchief linen ones with skyblue embroideries (held in place with a wisp of tape) that I delight in making for newborns.

So cute, and only a month away! For some more Jewish crafts, check out my Mishloach Manot post as http://thecraftsdept.marthastewart.com/. There's still a few hours of daylight to pass out Purim treats. Happy Purim!

I'm knitting, crocheting, and sewing all the yarmulkahs for our wedding. The wedding is in May and I have about 2/3 of them done. Thanks for the pattern, I'm looking forward to trying it out.

I used to crochet kipot in high school, but with much more intricate patterns I created/followed on graph paper - cartoon characters, Hebrew names, etc. Those take a long time!

This is lovely! Is there an equivalent knitting pattern?

Hi Karen-

We don't have a knitted version available here. I know there is one in a book called "Greetings from the Knit Cafe" which, unfortunately, we don't carry anymore. But you can find it on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Greetings-Knit-Cafe-Suzan-Mischer/dp/1584794836

Also, you might have some luck on Ravelry.

Thanks for your question!

Molly
