Improvisational Patchwork with Denyse Schmidt

As many of you already know, Denyse Schmidt is a very talented author, fabric designer and quilt maker. What you may not know is that Denyse teaches fantastic workshops in her Bridgeport Connecticut studio. Over the years many of our customers at Purl Patchwork have taken Denyse's Improvisational Patchwork Workshop and have positively gushed about it, and with good reason. The day long class teaches skills and techniques that give students freedom within their sewing and gets their creativity flowing. The class includes lunch, snacks and all the supplies you'll need to make 4-6 quilt blocks that you get to take home. We highly recommend this class to anyone who who wants to expand their artistic expression and meet some great people in the process!

Recently Denyse has expanded her class offerings to include Sewing 101, Improvisational Patchwork, Advanced Improv and Project Workshops. You can find all of the details and sign up on Denyse's site by clicking here.

We invited Denyse to do a guest blog post about her upcoming workshops, here is what she had to share with us:

What a treat to be able to say hello here on the Purl Bee, my favorite source for delightful inspiration! I knit my first-ever scarf with crazy, hairy wool and the most beautiful wooden needles Joelle gave me when I visited the shop a few years ago – I had just quit smoking and my new knitting habit helped me kick an old one. It was a gesture that had a profound impact on my life, and one I will always be grateful for.

I often hear from folks who take my Improvisational Patchwork class that the workshop has, in some way, a lasting effect on their work or life. I never feel as though I can take credit for having actually “taught” anything – I simply provide the opportunity for participants to learn about themselves, and their own creativity. We are all familiar with the many (many) roadblocks that disrupt our creative confidence. In Improvisational Patchwork, you’ll practice ways to move past those sticky habits of mind so you can tap into your unique creative voice.

Come spend the day changing the way you think about color and patchwork in my beautiful Bridgeport CT studio with like-minded creative folks. Whether you are an experienced quilter or a beginning crafter, we guarantee a rewarding, memorable experience. All you need is a tiny bit of machine-sewing experience, and an open mind – we provide the rest!

The next Improvisational Patchwork class is Saturday, June 13, from 11am to 4pm. Register here. I look forward to seeing you! – Denyse

Improv Patchwork was great! I took it last weekend. Thanks, Denyse, for reminding me that when you let go, great things can happen.

If I lived in CT - watch out! I'd be there in a heartbeat! You need a satellite class in Ohio! :-)

The photos look amazing. I would love to attend one of the classes. If only I can convince someone to spot me an airfare to the US...

Fun! I lived in Bridgeport and grew up in Trumbull, right next to it. It's cool to see someone creative doing things there.
Amazingly, I was able to participate in Denyse Schmidt's Improvisational Piecing workshop in the Spring of 2007. I say "amazingly" because I can barely get to the store with my list in hand, let alone fly to New York, drive to Connecticut, and particpate in one of the most interesting classes I have ever taken. The experience has resonated with me and facilitated an interesting shift in the way I use fabric and think about design. I would highly recommend attending one of her workshops, and I am grateful for the experience.

Hopefully one of these days I can take a trip to the east coast to take Denyse's class! I'm about ready to hop on a plane right now. Denyse, if you are ever in Seattle, please consider teaching a class!
