Oliver + S Swingset Tunic and Skirt

With summer officially here we wanted to give the window at Purl Patchwork a fresh summer look with a new outfit from an Oliver + S pattern! I always enjoy sewing from these patterns because the are so well written and I usually end up learning something new. This time around I decided to make the Swingset Tunic and Skirt and I am so happy with how it came out.

I made the Tunic out of Liberty of London Tana Lawn in a print called Coral Toria. This is one of my absolute favorite fabrics. The Tana lawn has an incomparable drape and feel and this particular print is such a dazzling color. I made the very cute little skirt out of P and B Color Spectrum in Off White to let the the bright top really shine. I made a size 3T and I only needed 1/2 a yard of the Tana Lawn, so it's also a great way to use Liberty without breaking the bank.

It was fun watching this  project come together, especially the Tunic. For a not-very-experienced apparel sewer like myself sewing from a good pattern is sort of like reading a mystery novel: there are lots of twists and turns but at the end it all gets wrapped up so neatly. Midway through sewing the Tunic  I was saying to myself, "I have no idea how this is going to become a shirt..." but at the end I had a beautiful little top, which really brightens up the store window.

I would highly recommend this pattern to anyone who wants to gain a little confidence with their garment sewing ability because the end product is so finished and lovely. It seems like the perfect summer sewing; quick, wearable and totally satisfying. Here's to a summer of great projects!

Oliver + S patterns strike a perfect balance between modern designs and simple, classic children's clothing- with just enough 'Good Ship Lollipop' mixed in to make the clothes fun and wearable! This tunic/skirt combo could become a summer staple in any little girl's summer line-up! Love it!
I wish Oliver +S patterns came in adult sizes. I would wearr that little top in a heartbeat...especially made in Liberty. This is so cute.

how does the top fasten in back, or does it? And is the skirt elastic waist? thinking of making for 3 little granddaughters :>

Hi Kate-
The tunic closes with 3 buttons at the top of the back and the skirt has both elastic and a drawstring. Thanks so much for you question! - Molly

Adorable top! I love the Oliver+S patterns, and hope they come out with more boy styles. Cute little boy patterns are so hard to come by! Thanks for the inspiration.

So pretty! I've shied away from garment sewing because I don't have a serger. Did you use one for this project?

Hi Monica,
No, no serger involved! If you haven't sewn many garments, the Oliver and S patterns are wonderful, the instructions are so detailed and easy to follow as well.
