Molly's Sketchbook: New Jumprope Dress Pattern from Oliver + S!

The new Oliver + S patterns are here! Oliver + S is an adorable line of children's patterns designed by the supremely talented Liesl Gibson. During the past few seasons I have made many of Liesl's patterns and have enjoyed each and every one (you can check out my previous posts here , here, and here).  Liesl is such a good teacher and following her patterns is like having a private class with her. When reading through and sewing them I feel like I'm learning the correct way to do things, not just the quickest or the easiest, and the finished garments are always well made and professional looking.

This time around I made the brand new Jump Rope Dress and I am so pleased with how it came out. When I look at it I can't believe that I made it myself!

I love all of the little details, like button flaps on the sleeve,

and the neat placket on the front.

I would recommend this pattern for anyone who has sewn a simple piece of clothing before. It's so well explained that you don't need as much experience as you might think.

Since I knew I was making such a special dress I wanted an equally special fabric. Luckily we had just gotten in the new seasonal collection of Liberty of London Tana Lawn so I had lots to choose from! This 100% cotton fabric has the most exquisite printing and lovely drape. My favorite of the new prints was Fairy Clock, a gorgeously detailed dandelion print, but it was hard to pick the color. If I was making the dress for myself I would have gone with the sophisticated Dark Green color way (on the bottom left of the picture above) but it seemed a little somber for a three year old. I also loved the Cream and Silver (top right) since it was so graphic and crisp. And then there was the Tan and Pink (bottom left) with it's neutral background and  unexpected vibrant detail. But ultimately I went with the Tan and Purple (top right) since it seemed so autumnal and I think this is the perfect back to school dress!

The Jump Rope Dress pattern contains two different versions (or "views") in the same package. I made view A but I'm looking forward to trying the long sleeved version, view B, soon. I just wish it came in my size!

In addition to the Jump Rope Dress, Oliver + S  also has an amazing and practical new School Days Jacket and Coat Pattern that will come in handy as the days get colder. Liesl made a rainproof version of this jacket in oilcloth which you can see on her great blog, Disdressed.

If you'd like to sew something special (while learning a lot!), you can see the whole line of Oliver + S patterns here and our entire selection of Liberty of London fabric here. Happy sewing!-- Molly

I love the pattern and the fabric! Does anyone know of an adult pattern similar to this? It would be make a really cute set! (If you like that sort of thing, which I do:)

If only I had a three-year-old in need of an adorable dress! Do you have any suggestions for finding a grown-up-sized frock in a comparable style?

Okay, does anyone know anyone who would make one for my little girl? I've got full confidence with quilting, but not with clothing construction. Both the coat and dress are dreams.

Love this dress! I've bought a couple of other Oliver + S patterns but have yet to try them, but this would be a perfect fall dress for my 2 year old! I have a precious apple fabric that I would love to use but I only have a yard. Do you think I could squeeze by with just a yard of fabric (when the pattern actually calls for 1 1/2 for her size)? I'm thinking I could use a coordinating fabric for the belt and pockets if need be. Also, do the Oliver + S patterns run pretty true to size? Great work and I look forward to trying the pattern myself!

The draping of the liberty fabric is so perfect on that dress! I love the Oliver + S patterns and can't wait to give this one (and a few others a try). Thank you for the beautiful inspiration. One of these days I'm going to make it to NY and come by the beautiful 'Purl' store....I can't wait!

Cheryl, Oliver + S has a boutique sewer program for people who aren't so confident in their garment sewing skills to purchase licensed garments made from Oliver + S patterns. You can find the full list here: http://www.oliverands.com/garments/custom.phtml (Full disclosure: I'm a Boutique Sewer for O+S, but by no means the only one!)

So many people are echoing the same sentiment, "Pattern in adult sizes please!" I'll be there at the register when you have them. Love the sleeves and pocket!

I am pleased to see there are now some patterns in larger sizes as my little girl is now older, however she is on the cusp of a size 10. Please keep going and size them up for the preteen set so we can continue to sew for her and she doesn't have to wear the stuff they sell now. (I'd go for my size too!) What a great idea.

ditto the adult size pattern! I saw this dress in the picture and thought "that's the dress that will make me start sewing again," but alas it's about twenty sizes too small :)
