Molly's Sketchbook: A Daisy Halloween Costume

It may still technically be summer but an autumnal chill has blown into New York in the last few days reminding us that the fall is just around the corner. And with the fall comes one of my favorite days- Halloween! I love Halloween and I have ever since I can remember. When I was a kid my mom made me the most beautiful costumes every year. Recently I was going through some old photos and I found this one of me at age 5 dressed as a flower fairy and inspecting all of my candy loot:

Looking back on it now it seems like a pretty simple costume especially when I think about some of my other more elaborate costumes. For instance, one year I was a court jester and my mom made me an entire two tone satin suit complete with a tall hat  and bells.  But for this flower fairy costume I think she just sewed a flower collar she made onto a leotard and I wore some store bought wings and a tu-tu. But the important thing is that I loved it! Seeing this old picture inspired me to design my own simple take on a flower costume this Halloween.

I came up with this daisy head-dress and (purl)bee pin because I like the idea of a child being able to wear something comfortable like a leotard or tee-shirt and transforming it into a whimsical costume with a few simple additions. This is also a very easy to sew project since it's made mostly out of wool felt which doesn't need to be hemmed (plus it comes in the most wonderful vivid colors!). With comfort in mind I lined the headband of the daisy head-dress so the wool felt wouldn't itch and added ribbons to tie it in place.

Sewing this project was really fun. Watching the flower bloom little by little as I sewed on each petal was really rewarding and I loved imagining my super cute young friend Coco here wearing it while she trick-or-treats this October 31st.

If you'd like to make one for the little daisy in your life please check out my Daisy Halloween Costume Project Journal here. Happy Halloween!-- Molly

That kid is so cute in that get-up that my face is hurting from smiling...

Guess the children in my life are going to Halloween parties as flowers...their aunt may also!

iiiiiiiihhhhhhh it so cute and so simple - my girl will be a Daisy one of these days. We don't celebrate Halloween in Denmark - but I'll find an occasion:)

I wonder if after Halloween mom's can repurpose the daisy headdress for a chic winter scarf or cowl look?

I've seen some outrageous and fashionable chunky statement neck accessories in the fall fashion mags. . .

This a cute costume and the little Bee really makes it! This would be a great costume for the little kids in chilly Colorado! You know, we have to work our costumes around our winter jackets! :)

I was a Flower Fairy one year as a kid, too! However, as I recall, that was one of my parents' elaborate endeavors. They made some really rocking wings with caning and fabric, and the dress was lovely and petaled with lots of tulle. Lots to live up to as I embark upon making my first Halloween costumes for my kids this year!

You daughter is a doll and the costume is adorable, lucky you! I remember the days of making my sons costumes... Power Ranger, Scarecrow, Sumo Wrestler... good memories it makes...

I love that photo of you as a little girl Molly.. and love this simple costume. I am a big fan of any costume that can go into our dress up box after Halloween. I can see my little girl wanting to be a flower all year long.

So very sweet. I was a clown, and stawberry shortcake before, made by my mom. Great memories.
