Whit's Knits: Spiral Rib Leg Warmers

For many of us, the mere mention of leg warmers conjures up vivid images of ripped sweatshirts and really big hair. Having grown up in the eighties, I love Olivia Newton John as much as the next person, but that doesn't necessarily mean I want "Let's Get Physical" to be my theme song for 2010. However, I'm not so curmudgeonly that I can't appreciate new takes on old trends.

So, instead of acrylic and rainbow stripes, these 21st century leg warmers are super soft merino and naturally subtle colors. Hand dyed by Manos del Uruguay's cooperative of local craftswomen, this 5-ply Merino is perfectly now. A South American rural community sustaining itself through its traditional crafts sounds like a very beautiful future to me!

If you're not ready to say goodbye to everything that's come before, please visit my Sprial Rib Leg Warmers Project Journal. You will find everything there that you need to make yourself a gorgeous pair of 2010 leg warmers! Thanks! - Whitney

My 3 year old daughter would love these. She is all about "leg socks", as she calls them. Too bad I've never mastered knitting.

I've been looking for something like this! Now I just wish I could knit...so I'd totally pay someone for a pair of these!

Hey! You know what! I just might make some of these. I was wearing my self-made, knee high, knit socks yesterday and really loving that I could lower the temperature in the house to save some money. Having leg warmers is a fabulous idea. It goes on my list...and might even surpass some projects on that list already! :) Your tutorials are great! Thanks!!!

I also have strong 80s associations with leg warmers-- but I'm also all for reclaiming things and making them your own. And I love leg warmers because I don't have to give up wearing dresses in the winter. These are a wonderful iteration Whitney-- a unique spiral pattern with a sleeker profile than most legwarmers (sometimes they're so bulky that legwarmer is all you see.) Thank you for the pattern!

Hmmm, I have been knitting leg warmers for my daughter for almost 3 years now. I had no idea they were not all the rave. I often joked that I should make some for myself. Now I definitely will!!! :)

Um, yay!!! These are super useful, and look much more au courante than Olivia's. I'm queueing them up today!

I want them so badly BUT I don't know how to do the spirally pattern (or anything more advance than increases/decreases & sead stitch).

These are truly from my past - I loved my leg warmers and some days I think boy those were a good idea lol but like you, I don't want "lets get physical" to be my theme song either!

I recently made Juniper Mitts which use the same spiral pattern and they are the squishiest things on earth - I loooove them. I'd been thinking about what else I could do in that stitch pattern!

This pattern is fantastic. My daughter attends a private school where she wears a uniform. Although she wears tights during the cold weather, she is still cold waiting for the bus. She has grown tired of wearing snow pants all of the time. She wanted me to make these leggings as soon as she saw them because they are long. They will look so adorable on her. Maybe we can start a new trend!

I've been thinking about leg warmers for ever (this winter, which feels like forever) and jumped for joy when I saw this sweet project! Thank you! I've cast on and have about 6 inches done on my first leg warmer! Yeah, warm legs are ahead!

I was just telling Dreg yesterday that I need more leg warmers. And really - I only have one pair so I NEED more :)
