Molly's Sketchbook: Mother's Day Embroidered Scarves

Mother's day is a great time to make handmade gifts. I can't think of another occasion when the thought and effort that go into such a gift would be as appreciated. Mothers tend to love the things their children make for them, whether it be a piece of macaroni art or something a little more "adult" like one of these beautiful scarves.

I made these scarves with this idea of handmade care in mind, but I also made them to be unfussy and wearable. The body of the scarf is made from our luminous loosely woven linen, perfect for the warmer Spring weather. For the embroidery I used the amazing silk needlepoint thread from Trebizond. This thread is made of three strands of the most richly colored silk and it makes the finished scarves look so distinct.

These scarves are simple to make, even if you have very little embroidery experience. Best of all, once you're done you will have such a special gift for your mom (or grandmother or sister or aunt or friend)! If you'd like to make one, or all three, please visit my Mother's Day Embroidered Scarves Project Journal here.

Happy Stitching!-- Molly

It's been a while since I've either sewn or done any hand embroidery, though I'm experienced at both, so I'm taking a brief break from non-stop knitting to make several of these for myself and friends. The fiber equivalent of a weekend get-away :-)

Perfect Mother's Day gift to myself..! I just ordered the fabric and thread.
I'm fascinated by the bentwood hanger in the photo.. Any idea of it's history/age..?
Thanks for continuing to inspire me ~

That was really well-made. Scarves and tableware could be both made like this. You could use recyclable materials.

I made one of these but I sewed the ends together to make a circle scarf, and I embroidered the long edges. You can see the start of my work at http://yeahtrue.blogspot.com/2010/12/guess-what-last-night-i-actually-got-to.html.
I ran out of embroidery thread before I could finish the whole thing! Thanks for the great tutorial and inspiration - your tutorials are always my favorite - clean, fresh, simple, and easy to understand - and the finished product always turns out great.
