Molly's Sketchbook: Luxury Liberty Scarves

A couple of weeks ago Nikki, the maganger of Purlsoho and a knitter and sewer extraordinaire brought in the most beautiful scarf she'd sewn for her mother. It was a large square of Liberty of London, Tana Lawn and it was stunning. It looked like a designer silk scarf and I knew I wanted to make something like it right away!

As you probably already know our love for Liberty of London, Tana Lawn is boundless! One of the most common things we hear from customers when they feel it is, "Is this silk?" They simply can't believe it's 100% cotton (but it is!). It has such a smooth feel and beautiful drape, which makes it totally perfect for this project. It also comes in the most inspiring and incredible prints and a large square scarf is just the thing to show it off.  (By the way, if you know and love this fabric as much as we do you'll be pleased to learn that we've been able to lower our price on it recently since we are now getting it directly from Liberty in London!)

I have quite a few square silk scarves because they are perfect for so many things, from covering your head if you get stuck in the rain, to wrapping around your shoulders if it gets nippy out. Plus, since they're made from such light weight fabric, they fold up small and can be stashed away no problem. It was so exciting to think that I could easily make my own.

I chose two complimentary prints for each scarf and finished them with a simple double fold binding. It didn't take very long and the results are spectacular! I can't wait to pull one out of my bag next time I feel a chill.

If you'd like to make your own please visit my Luxury Liberty Scarves Project Journal.

Happy Sewing!-- Molly

That Liberty map fabric is beautiful - I have been looking at it for a couple of weeks now ans wondering if I can justify the spend and what to turn it into (hmmm, some kind of simple top perhaps...). I think the purple is the best colourway too. Fabulous!

It would be wonderful if you had a made to order service for some of the lovely projects you show on the bee. Many of your fans don't sew and quite frankly never will, but they do shop!

I love Liberty of London and am so glad to have found a source for it through you! I really enjoy your blog and check in often! This is where I found out about the book, Carefree Clothes For Little Girls. You can see the dress I made up, for my grand daughter Lauren, from this book on my blog: http://rosellebirds.blogspot.com/ ... now I'm off to look at your Liberty of London Fabrics!! Thanks!!

Oh my. Coincidently, I was just in London and bought quite a lot of their tana lawn thinking just maybe I can make a scarf from some for myself as well as for gifts...well, you have confirmed that for me now and I can hardly wait to dig in...
