Molly's Sketchbook: Oliver + S Sketchbook Shirt and Shorts
We are big fans of Oliver + S patterns. They are brilliantly explained and illustrated and the garments that they make are so well made. Every time I sew one I learn something new. I was intrigued by the new Sketchbook Shirt and Shorts pattern in particular because cute boys patterns are so hard to come by. I love this pattern's simple shape and small details like the box pleat at the back of the shirt.
Luckily we have a lot of cute boys fabrics (which can also be a bit hard to come by!) I chose the Kokka Cute Cars in Blue for the shirt. I liked its color and the cars were playful but not too young. For the shorts I used the Kiyohara Brown Canvas because it was sturdy and looked great with the shirt.
Sewing this pattern introduced me to a lot of new skills. It was so rewarding and interesting to actually sew in real lined pockets! I'd also never done a flat collar like this one and I was so happy with how it turned out. If you'd like to sew your own set here is what you'll need (I made a 3T, your fabric requirements will be different depending on the size you choose to make):
- A Sketchbook Shirt Pattern
- One yard of fabric for the shirt. I used Kokka Cute Cars
- One yard of fabric for the shorts. I used Kiyohara Brown Canvas
- Six 1/2-inch buttons
- 1 yard of 3/4-inch elastic
- 1/4-yard of light weight fusible interfacing
Happy Sewing! --Molly
ps- There is a slight error on a few of the pattern pieces in this pattern but it's easily worked around if you go to the errata page for this pattern on the Oliver + S website.
