Molly's Sketchbook: New Oliver + S Music Box Jumper in Liberty's Kingly Cord!

We're so excited about the new designs of the Oliver + S children's patterns. These patterns are a favorite at Purl Soho not only because they're so cute, but also because of their detailed instructions which include easy to understand diagrams and illustrations. Every time I make one I feel like I become a better seamstress. Liesl Gibson, the founder and designer of Oliver + S really knows what she's talking about. She trained at New York's Fashion Institute of Technology and worked as a designer in the industry before starting the company. Because of this experience and training her patterns always come out looking so finished and professional.

Every time Oliver + S comes out with a new line of patterns I can't resist sewing at least one of them. This time I chose the Music Box Jumper (it's available here in the smaller size range) because I love its old-fashioned feel and versatility. A little girl can wear it over a tee-shirt on a warm day or over a long sleeve shirt and tights if it's cold out.

Since Autumn is coming I wanted to make it out of a slightly heavier fabric so I chose Liberty of London's Kingly Cord. This fabric is simply amazing. Everyone at Purl Soho has totally fallen in love with it! It combines the stunning prints of Liberty of London Tana Lawn with the sturdiness and texture of a fine whaled corduroy. I chose the Lou Lou Isabella print in Red and Blue because its lively primary color scheme seemed perfect for a back-to-school dress. I finished it off with six of our lovely medium sized shell buttons in yellow. I chose to leave off the buttons that the pattern calls for on the front flaps because I liked the simplicity of the front on its own.

This is a great project for those of you who might have sewn a couple of simple patterns before but want to expand your skills. As I mentioned earlier these patterns are very informative and well explained. They are totally do-able and in the end the finished product is always impressive!

If you'd like to try one out for yourself you can browse our entire section of Oliver + S patterns here (they also have some great patterns for boys!).  --Molly

I love this fabric and the joy that comes from sewing an Oliver + S pattern is so nice. I just placed an order to make this dress. A great combination.

Where can I find the pattern info such as sizing and yardage? Need size 4 or 5 toddler, and don't know what size pattern or yardage to order. Thank you.

When we uploaded the product we forgot to add the yardage requirements, so sorry! We'll get them on there on monday.

I just got back from a weekend trip to NYC and bought this pattern and some fabric from your store! It was really lovely to see all the projects you have done and I have admired on the web up close. They looked even better in person. Gosh I wish I had seen this dress. It looks so great - but with an Oliver and S and Liberty combo - how could you go wrong?!?!
I bought some Liberty, City Weekend, and some Japanese fabrics while there. Now I may have to order some kingly cord! Thanks for all your great projects. Keep them coming!
