Book Review: Oliver + S Little Things to Sew

Oliver + S Little Things to Sew is the first book by Oliver + S  founder and designer Liesl Gibson and we're so excited about it. Liesl has been a longtime friend of Purl Soho and it's been thrilling to see her creative endeavors grow over the years, starting with her inspiring personal blog, and progressing through her great Oliver + S patterns, her pretty City Weekend fabrics, and now this adorable book.

Oliver + S Little Things to Sew, by Liesl Gibson from STC Craft on Vimeo.

As many of you already know, Oliver + S patterns are clean and classic looking, and are always incredibly well explained. Liesl passes on her vast sewing knowledge in the most easy to understand and thorough way. Her patterns are challenging in the best possible sense because you always end up learning something from them.

This new book takes the Oliver + S aesthetic further by focusing more on kid's accessories like hats, back packs, and toys, rather than traditional garments. It's published by our favorite craft book publisher, Melanie Falick | STC Craft and it has the wonderful design, pictures, and full pull out patterns that make all of their books so great. Put simply, this is a must have for everyone who sews for children.

These reversible bucket hats are classic Oliver + S in that they are so fresh and wearable. They would make a great birthday gift or a perfect project for a kid going away to summer camp.

This explorer vest is a rarity in the world of children's sewing patterns, a fun garment designed with boy in mind (although it would certainly work for girls as well.)

The playtown project is one of our favorites, especially because the yarn store reminds us of our old Sullivan Street location. These adorable little stuffed buildings are both toys and great decorations.

The Penguin Backpack is another favorite, combining the utility of a well made back pack with a fun, whimsical design. This is an additional project that would work great for boys or girls.

There are just too many great projects to list them all here! You can see even more cute images from the book by checking out the Oliver + S Little Things to Sew gallery on the STC | Melanie Falick Books site right here. And if you'd like to see them all please pick up a copy of this great new book right here.
