Big Stitch Crocheted Alpaca Rugs!

Just about this time each year, our old drafty home begs for super cozy area rugs.  Each time I step out of bed I think of how happy my feet would be if they landed on a soft, lofty rug, and each time my daughter and I read books in front of the fireplace I think of how nice it would be to have the warmth and comfort of something hand made beneath us.  I've been determined to make these rugs myself for years, but only if I could find the super bulky and natural yarn I was seeing in my mind.  Imagine my excitement when we found the perfect yarn for my fantasy rugs!  Our Big Stitch Alpaca Yarn creates the softest, loftiest rug your lucky toes will ever step on.

The Big Stitch Alpaca Yarn is grown and handcrafted in the USA.  The Alpaca that makes up 70% of this amazing yarn is gathered from local farmers and then spun together with 15% wool and 15% nylon by a tiny mill in Ohio.  Each skein is called a  "bump" and is approximately 140 yards long.

Two bumps make the small gray rug (approximately 42-inches across) and four make the large rug (approximately 70-inches across).

If you'd like to try your hand at creating one of these cozy crocheted rugs you can find the pattern right here.  Enjoy!  -- Page

P.S. Stay tuned for our Big Stitch Knitted Rug!

Those rugs are lovely. The living area is beautiful, too!
Question: Why are the skeins called "bumps"? I've never heard of that before.

Sarah M,
A "bump" is the term used by the mill as a unit of measure. A bump is a standard 40 ounces or 2.5 pounds.

Thanks for the great question.

This is a fantastic project! I can't wait for the knitted rug, because that's my thang... I'm not the best crocheter, but I can knit 'til the cows come home.

Well, now i'm sad i just saw the price of this yarn... yikes!!! Any suggestions for a more affordable yarn?

This is such a lovely pattern, simple and elegant. I am considering to try this one in the cascade magnum and while this is a slightly thinner yarn (hahaha, thinner in this context is slightly hilarious) , the color choices are more versatile. I clearly see multiple rugs in my future :-)

I have been dreaming of crocheting rugs for years - just waiting for the right yarn to come along! How do you think these will wash up? I'm thinking they would be great in the bathroom, but would definitely have to hold up to frequent(ish) washing...

Hi Jordan-

Cascade Magnum doubled would be a more affordable alternative. You might need to use a slightly smaller hook so it would be best to do a swatch before you got started.

Here's a link to the yarn: http://www.purlsoho.com/purl/products/item/650-Cascade-Yarns-Magnum

Thanks for your question!

Hi Robyn-

These rugs can be spot cleaned but are not machine washable.

Thank you for your nice comment!

Can you tell me anything about the corn on the cob print in the back, it is fantastic!

Hi Molly,

Beautiful rugs, I am also going to try making the large one but am among the ones who cannot afford the big stitch alpaca (really wish I could). How many skeins of the Cascade Yarns Magnum would I need to make this?

HI Julie-

You will need to double the Magnum so you will need double the total yardage as well.

For the small rug you will need 5 skeins of Magnum (one of which should be rolled into 2 separate balls.) For the large one you would need 9 skeins (again one of these skein should be rolled into 2 separate balls.)

Thanks for your question!- Molly

Do you have a knitted version of this rug made with the Big Stitch Alpaca? Love the crocheted one but would be interested in viewing the knitted version as well. Thanks, Diane
