Molly's Sketchbook: The Purl Bee Penguin

Winter in New York City can be hard to love with its frozen sidewalks, dirty snowbanks, and bare trees. But this winter I'm counting on my new cold weather friend, the Purl Bee Penguin, to help me through! Its happy ovoid shape and graphic palette are sure to remind me that joy really does exist in January. Just ask an Emperor Penguin!

I used our new Penguin Fat Quarter Bundle, a lively mix of black and white dots, stripes, and prints, to sew up this quirky little trio of penguins. I loved seeing how each one developed its own personality as I sewed, becoming more and more alive with each stitch!  They are also real crowd pleasers. Even my non-sewing thirty-something friends all oohed and aahed when they saw my penguins lined up on my ironing board.

The Purl Bee Penguins are pretty addictive to make, and I don’t think that I’ll be able to stop with just these three. Check back in a few weeks; I may have amassed a penguin colony! If you'd like to sew your own little dose of winter cheer please visit my Purl Bee Penguin Journal here.

Love these - I especially love the fat little feet. They have so much character.

These are oh so adorable. Black and white is my favorite color combo so I'm sure I have plenty of fabric I could use for this.

Yes, I suppose January is pretty easy for a penguin - middle of summer! Sympathy for you New Yorkers in winter; London's rarely as bad. These penguins are gorgeous, I think I'll add them to a list of things to start making well in advance for next Christmas!

Wowie zowie, your timing couldn't be better! I just took my nieces to the Monterey Bay Aquarium last week, and they *loved* the penguins. Making these for them will be a fabulous reminder of our visit.

I find this project to be very attractive, and your directions are so easy to follow. I have started my first penguin using navy, sky blue, and gold color silk fabrics, which I happened to have on hand. It will be interesting to see if the penguin will actually stand up on its own.
Your patterns and photo instructions are thorough and beautifully produced. Thank you for all of the fine sewing ideas.

Those are so cute- I love them- My son is really into penguins after seeing them at the California Academy of Science.
A group of penguins is referred to as a waddle.
